Description:

Advancing technology increases our ability to intervene in the course of natural events involving human health and well-being. This one-term 0.5 FCE course will broadly focus on ethical questions and dilemmas in both pathology and embryology. Topics to be reviewed include, but are not limited to, ethical considerations in research, biobanking, confidentiality in the use of samples, autopsy ethics, ethics of clinical teaching, emerging reproductive technologies, gene editing, genetic alteration/genetic enhancement, and the ethical implications of changes to the germ line.

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2025 to April 30, 2025

Size of appointment: 72 hours

Salary: Sessional Instructional Assistant, $52.26/hour

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications: Masters in Science with direct knowledge and training in Bioethics.

Preferred qualifications: Priority will be given to candidates with experience at graduate level teaching in Bioethics, especially in the Biomedical field.

Description of duties:

This course will be delivered in-person. Sessional Instructional Assistant duties include in-person attendance during the time of course delivery ensuring the classroom and student interactions are being supported through education lectures, material and activities in ethics and biomedical ethics reflecting the Clinical Embryology and the Pathologists’ Assistant disciplines. The SIA will prepare material and lead discussions as required.

  • Provide office hours to students related to course material including understanding and preparing assignments.
  • Creation, maintenance and management of the Quercus site for the course, collecting material from the lecturers in advance and posting lecturer slide sets (power points), handouts, reading lists, journal articles and bibliographies and preparing other course content as required.
  • Reading appropriate text and source material as required, especially to prepare for class discussions and assignments.
  • Setting up, preparing and overseeing all aspects of in-person course delivery. Attending all classes in-person and providing assistance in the classroom to lecturers and students.
  • Meeting and consulting with course supervisor as required

In the event of a change in public health and university guidelines the course delivery may change to online Zoom delivery under the direction, guidance and management of the course SIA.
