The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has an exciting Forest Biometrician opportunity in the Forest Service Branch, located in Prince Albert. The Ministry of Environment's role is to manage the health of Saskatchewan's environment in a responsible manner that supports sustainable growth through objective, transparent and informed decision-making and stewardship. We provide objective, evidence-based advice to decision-makers and deliver programs in a fair, impartial manner aligned with government directed policy. As the Forest Biometrician you will

  • Collaborate on, and/or direct the collection, management, interpretation, analysis and application of forest measurement data;
  • Conduct statistical analyses and generate reports related to sampling design, forest growth and yield, and forest inventory attributes;
  • Design and apply biometric tools such as growth models, yield curves, stand and stock tables, taper functions, site index functions;
  • Serve as a subject matter expert providing policy direction and expertise to other branches, government ministries, and industry.

The ideal candidate will have

  • Knowledge of data collection procedures for forest inventory and growth and yield;
  • Knowledge of GIS and other tools for management of large datasets;
  • An understanding of general data science and demonstrated expertise in statistical analysis including regression and/or imputation methods;
  • An understanding of the role of the public servant in executing government-directed policy;
  • Experience writing code in SAS, R, or Python programming languages.

Typically, the competencies required for this position would be obtained through the completion of a master's degree in forestry or master's degree in a field of mathematics supplemented with forestry education or experience.
