At the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration (LSI), we are responsible for delivering effective and efficient regulatory management for the protection of the public and workers’ safety through education, outreach, inspection and enforcement, equipment registration, permits, and licenses. The Safety Branch employees throughout Nova Scotia do this by using the Pathways to Compliance to enhance safety through setting, promoting, verifying and enforcing requirements under various pieces of legislation.

About Our Opportunity


Under the general supervision of the Manager, Elevators, Lifts and Amusements, the Inspector is independently responsible for the enforcement of the Elevator and Lifts Act and Regulations, the Amusement Devices Safety Act and Regulations across the province. This is done through providing information, advice and technical direction and interpretation of applicable codes and standards for various stakeholders. The Officer conducts a wide variety of specialized technical inspections as well as investigations of accidents, incidents, and complaints.

The Inspector will be responsible for compliance and enforcement with the above legislation, including immediate orders, issuing of summary offence tickets, as well as initiating prosecution action. Future responsibilities may include input to the technical development of the relevant CSA, ASME and ASTM codes and standards.

The Inspector will also review design drawings and specifications for elevators, lifts and amusement rides, to ensure compliance with applicable Codes and Standards. They will also prepare monthly activity and status reports as well as attend meetings and prepare associated correspondence.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role you have completed High School and completion of a related trade or technical training in design, construction, maintenance and inspection of elevating devices, plus 7 years of related experience after the course completion. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

Requirements for this role also include:

  • Class A Elevator Certificate of Competency
  • Working knowledge of the requirements of applicable CSA, ASME and ASTM Codes and standards
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical theory and technology
  • Experience interpreting regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Experience working with diverse groups and their representatives

Assets for this role include:

  • Significant experience in a relevant industry

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Pay Grade: TE 30

Salary Range: $3,066.18 - $3,561.47 Bi-Weekly
