PUMPING STATION OPERATOR

JOB SUMMARY:

This position reports to the Pumping Station Coordinator. The Pumping Station Operator is responsible to ensure that all water and wastewater pumping equipment is operational and optimized. The position is also responsible for water quality testing and monitoring to ensure that the City's drinking water meets the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines. This position includes maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment associated with the various pumping and storage facilities and water metering systems.

The position must remain current on industry changes including technology, legislation, standards, specifications, and industry best practices.

EDUCATION:

  • High School graduate or equivalency.
  • Successful completion of a technical course in a field directly related to municipal engineering including civil, mechanical, electrical, or industrial control that is accredited by the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists at the Technologist level. Must be eligible to become a member and maintain membership in the Association as a Professional Technologist (P.Tech or CET).
  • Must have Water Distribution Operator Class 1 and Wastewater Collection Class 1 certification, and must achieve Water Distribution Operator Class 2 and Wastewater Collection Class 2 within one year of accepting the position: upon approval to write by the Department of Post Secondary Education Training and Labour availability of written examination. Must take training and achieve any further requirements as per regulations or municipal initiatives.
  • A Certificate of Qualification in Electrical Construction with the Province of New Brunswick would be an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience with the operation and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment, preferably pumping equipment.
  • Previous work experience in a health regulated industry where operating standards have been maintained would be an asset.
  • Supervisory experience would be an asset.

LANGUAGE:

  • English essential. The ability to communicate in the French language would be an asset, but not a requirement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of SCADA computer systems would be an asset.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of power and pumping systems and equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems.
  • Above average initiative, motivation, judgment, and ability to problem solve.
  • Strong ability to anticipate and plan for City's future needs.
  • Must possess extensive knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment including pumps, motors, meters, PLC's, RTU's, control instrumentation and including the ability to program and calibrate various systems.
  • Ability to utilize standard administrative computer programs (Word, Excel, Teams, Email etc.) is required.
  • Must be willing to learn computer skills relevant to the position.

OTHER:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 New Brunswick Driver's License.
  • Must be able to work at heights to access/climb water storage facilities.

SUPERVISION:

  • Limited supervision of other permanent staff and casual employees including students.
  • May be assigned utility staff for various projects as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF WORK:

  • Combination of indoor and outdoor work environment.
  • Forty (40) hour per week.
  • Be part of city's 24/7 "on call" rotation and available for call outs and weekend duty rotation.
