About Us


The Maintenance Enforcement and Victim Services Division of the Department of Justice helps facilitate court ordered child and spousal support and offers a range of services to help victims of crime.

Within Victim Services, we promote victims rights and interests and advise government on issues relating to victims of crime. We also work with justice partners and the community to develop policies and programs that address the needs of crime victims. We provide the victim, spouse, or relative, with information, support and assistance as their case moves through the criminal justice system. When criminal charges are laid, victims and family members can contact us directly for help. We provide a range of services including the following programs: Provincial Victim Services Program, Child Victim/Witness Program, Criminal Injuries Counselling Program, Victim Impact Statement Program, Restitution Program, Sexual Offense Legal Representation Program, and Independent Legal Advice (ILA) Program.

About Our Opportunity


As the Program Coordinator, you are responsible for the coordination/administration of programs, and initiatives that require innovative approaches, that have an impact on multiple functions and/or overall business results with the division or department. Responsibilities may include promotion, interpretation of a variety of programs, assessment of applications, monitoring of client files and program status, promoting and/or provision of information related to program management. Areas of program responsibility includes the Criminal Injuries Counselling Program, Occupational Health and Safety Counselling, and the Victim Impact Statement Travel Fund Project.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Focus on Workplace Occupational Health and Safety files from within the province as a priority
  • Assists in managing projects and initiatives based on program needs
  • Use case management systems and other established management processes, procedures, and protocols.
  • Assist in the review and assessment of applications, preparation, evaluation, and award of counselling grants to clients.
  • Follow existing procedures to support the operation of the programs.
  • Review counsellor applications in request to become approved counsellors.
  • Coordinates and prepares documentation, communications for review and approval, while following up on pending issues.
  • Track and report status of applicant and client files, projects, and programs.
  • Produces accurate reports by collecting data from a variety of sources and inputting the data into standardized formats.
  • Reviews program material to ensure all required information is captured.
  • Coordinates Victim Impact Statement Travel Fund agreements.
  • Supports internal/external communication in responding to queries and issues from clients and counsellors, providing guidance and clarification regarding programs.

Qualifications and Experience


To be considered for this opportunity, you have a bachelors degree in a related field and at least one year of experience in client services in the community, with specialized exposure to the criminal justice and/or counseling fields (or an acceptable equivalent). You are effective at managing and prioritizing a heavy workload effectively with excellent case management skills. In addition, you have strong organizational skills, and you undertake delegated tasks and work independently. The competency you have developed in mediating complaints and proactively identifying and addressing the needs and concerns of the program users will be important in this role.

In addition to your strong communication and interpersonal skills, you listen proactively and understand the perspectives of others. Your expertise allows you to work effectively with various stakeholders while developing program plans, reviewing and updating programs, and assisting with program evaluation.

The following would be considered assets: Experience working with victims of crime; Understanding of first-voice, trauma-informed and intersectional service delivery approaches; Previous program coordination experience; Knowledge of applicable government legislation (i.e. Victims Rights and Services Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Nova Scotia Workplace Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights).

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency


Include, but not limited to:

  • Masters degree in a related field
  • Two-year diploma and three years of related work experience
  • Five years of related experience without any post secondary education

Additional Information


This is a TERM employment opportunity with anticipated end date of November 7, 2025. The appointment status (‘term’, ‘temporary’ or ‘casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade: PR 06 - PR 10

Salary Range: $1,924.95 - $2,760.42 Bi-Weekly
