The Opportunity
The Government of Saskatchewan is seeking an innovative executive who is committed to building organizational value through leadership, collaboration, and results.
This Assistant Deputy Minister role offers the opportunity to expand Saskatchewan’s global presence and support economic growth by leading international engagement. Working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, the Assistant Deputy Minister will set direction and oversee the development and management of international strategies to ensure alignment with government policy and priorities.
Leading a team of highly skilled professionals, this position will lead a coordinated and strategic approach to advocacy, international trade missions and diplomatic visits as well as manage the international office footprint for the Government of Saskatchewan to ensure Saskatchewan’s interests are being represented abroad.
Based in Regina, the position will allow you to leverage your leadership skills, passion, and technical expertise with a Ministry that holds deep rooted values of Respect and Integrity, Serving Citizens, Excellence and Innovation, and Acting as One Team.
Assistant Deputy Minister Responsibilities
Reporting to the Deputy Minister, the Assistant Deputy Minister is part of the senior executive team that shares responsibility for the development, planning and implementation of a strategic direction that aligns with the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth and ensures a ministry-wide perspective is incorporated into the delivery of programs and services.
As the Assistant Deputy Minister, you will:
- Participate as an executive team member providing leadership within the ministry and furthering the government-wide goals and objectives;
- Provide strategic options, comprehensive policy advice, briefing papers, recommendations and perspectives to the Deputy Minister on functions, activities and issues;
- Leverage your strong understanding of the Saskatchewan economy and the role of government in creating international relationships that support trade and economic growth;
- Represent the Government of Saskatchewan on various committees, delegations and missions to advance Saskatchewan’s international priorities;
- Build and maintain credible, collaborative partnerships and relationships across a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders;
- Mentor and develop staff using strong leadership and team building skills with a focus on building organizational community;
- Demonstrate exceptional diplomacy through written and oral communication including the ability to work with, and influence, a variety of stakeholders; and,
- Manage fiscal and human resources to ensure the effective use of resources in meeting ministry plan objectives.
Background and Knowledge Requirements
This opportunity is for experienced senior executives with an exceptional history of achieving results in collaborative environments, ideally within the field of international relations. In addition, you will have:
- Leadership strengths that promote inclusion, engagement and foster an innovative, collaborative environment;
- In-depth knowledge of government legislative and regulatory processes and protocols, in particular as it relates to public policy development and financial management;
- Proven capability to identify and deliver key strategic insights, counsel and policy to ensure decision making is made with the best possible advice;
- Demonstrated ability to build commitment through collaboration, consultation and consideration of citizen and stakeholder impacts; and,
- Well established consensus-building skills, strong leadership and team-building skills, with an ability to mentor and develop staff to a high level of accountability.
Work Hours and Travel Requirements
At times, this position will need to work outside normal working hours to accommodate international time zones. In addition, the position will also require international travel, with travel that could be for more than a week at a time. A valid passport is required.
