Reporting to the Manager, Student Life, the Supervisor, Academic Advising and Career Services provides support, leadership, and direction to a dynamic team of advisors and coordinators. Develops, delivers, and evaluates programs, services, and events that support students’ academic and career education journeys, including advising, industry events, hiring fairs, and educational workshops and resources. Supports employer services and engagement activities, including management of the Career Connect job board (Symplicity). Leads the recruitment, onboarding, and training of new staff and coordinates marketing and communications activities for the department. Works collaboratively across campus ensure effective and efficient delivery of student services, programs, and events for students and alumni. The Supervisor consistently monitors department activities to proactively identify and report trends, issues or concerns to the Manager, and is ultimately accountable for ensuring a highly impactful, positive student experience.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the unit’s operational hours to balance coverage and other essential work.
  • Liaise and collaborate between unit, academic areas, and other service areas.
  • Research advising and career education best practices and literature.
  • Provide training and developmental activities for staff.
  • Monitor and coach staff in service delivery and performance.
  • Participate on cross-functional teams.
  • Identify, recommend, and/or implement policy and process improvements.
  • Handle escalations.
  • Ensure quality assurance through regular auditing of advising notes and advising sessions.
  • Participate in departmental strategic planning.
  • Work with marketing team to ensure programs, services, and events are promoted to target audiences.

Academic/Career Advising, general and learning focus:

  • Engage students in helping relationships to support academic, personal, and career decisions.
  • Develop knowledge of NAIT programs and services.
  • Guide students in understanding/navigating NAIT processes and procedures, such as admission, program transfer, withdrawals, immigration and study permit concerns, etc.
  • Facilitate information sessions or workshops related to academic advising and/or international focus.
  • Collaborate with programs and services at NAIT to facilitate positive student experiences.
  • Maintain timely and accurate student records.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field required.
  • 5 years related experience, including some supervisory experience and experience addressing student, public, external, and staff inquiries/escalations.

Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).


Remuneration: $69,390.10 - $93,128.36 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Student Advisor III).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
