Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager of Patient Transport Program for supervision and guidance in the expanded role function, the incumbent is responsible for the provision of basic and advanced level patient care to pediatric and neonatal patients during inter-facility transport (regionally, provincially and nationally) May assume responsibility for and provide care to single or multiple patients during inter-facility transport, in accordance with Patient Transport Program protocols. Works collaboratively with transport coordinators (RT & RN), WEMS, paramedics, MTCC dispatch, STARS, LifeFlight, hospital site staff or other transport partners’ practices in accordance with philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards of the hospital; functions within the guidelines of the protocols for the transport program that are reviewed and agreed on by medical, nursing and respiratory care directors.
Experience
- Requires a minimum of 3 years of NICU and/or PICU experience within the last 5 years.
- Critical care transport experience is preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
- Entry-to-practice academic credential in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited Canadian program or a MARRT approved equivalent, if internationally educated, is required.
- Current in BLS, PALS, NRP, CAMATA required.
- Certification in ATLS preferred.
- Canadian Society Respiratory Therapy (CSRT) membership, or equivalent is preferred.
- Computer literacy.
- Must successfully pass Medication Calculation Test.
- Must successfully pass Pediatric/Neonatal Transport Course.
- Maintain continuing education credits in the related area of practice.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
- Current registration with the MARRT required.
- Current registration/membership in the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) is required or an equivalent, as determined by the Employer, for therapists not eligible for CSRT registration.
- Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time without resting.
- May require bending, crouching, and kneeling.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity are required (keyboarding, fine motor skills).
- Work area includes riding in enclosed spaces such as ambulances, helicopters and airplanes.
- Must demonstrate the use of safe and effective body mechanics while working with clients.
- Ability to perform manual ventilation with one or both hands for prolonged periods.
- Ability to run to emergencies.
- Ability to lift heavy medical equipment including measuring devices, monitors, D and E size gas cylinders and other equipment (weighing up to 20 kg) and occasionally assisting with moving up to 100 kg.
- Ability to push wheeled medical equipment.
- Ability to assist with the positioning of clients.
- May be required to occasionally work extended hours.
- Flexible working hours required to provide 24 hour/day, 7 day/week coverage, including rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.
- May be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, radiation, toxic materials, noise, allergens, physical and emotional stress, etc.
- May encounter aggressive and/or agitated clients/staff/visitors.
- Work environment commonly provides exposure to high noise levels.
