Overview

The Grande Prairie Fire Department (GPFD) and the International Association of Firefighter (IAFF) Local 2770 support the Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI). This is a program designed to support the holistic wellness of fire and emergency medical services personnel. WFI emphasizes a positive, non-punitive approach to wellness, integrating confidential behavioral health resources, education, and rehabilitation to mitigate the effects of cumulative stress and trauma. By fostering resilience and mental well-being, the initiative aims to enhance both the quality of life and the professional readiness of fire service members throughout their careers and beyond.

The GPFD is seeking a qualified and experienced psychologist or practice to deliver contracted services for in-person annual behavioral health evaluation and screening for approximately 100 first responders. This role involves supporting the well-being of those who serve and protect our community. The ideal provider will have expertise in addressing the unique mental health challenges, occupational stressors and cultural dynamics faced by first responders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct annual behavioral health evaluation and screening for first responders, adhering to professional and ethical standards.
  • Provide behavioral health screening for post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, active suicidality, and substance use disorder.
  • Build and maintain a professional and empathetic rapport with first responders.
  • Ensure all assessments comply with provincial regulations and confidentiality standards.

Qualifications

  • Person(s) must be a member of and in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologist.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mental health services.
  • Demonstrated experience working with first responders, such as police, firefighters, paramedics, or other emergency personnel.
  • Strong understanding of trauma, stress management, and resilience in high-stakes professions.
  • Must have an office in the City of Grande Prairie.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience in crisis intervention, PTSD treatment, or occupational stress management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining high standards of care.

Compensation

These services will be on a yearly contract basis and compensated on an hourly basis per session. The initial term of the contract is one year, with the possibility of extension based on organizational needs and performance.
