Geographic Information Systems Analyst

The Department of Community Health and Epidemiology is a dynamic, cohesive academic department comprising 18 core faculty, 34 associates and adjuncts, and 23 medical faculty in the Division of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. We have active MSc and PhD graduate programs and make a vital contribution to the undergraduate education of medical and health sciences students, and postgraduate education with the Public Health and Preventative Medicine Residency Program.
Primary Purpose: Applications are invited for a full-time research position starting February 1st 2025 in the Built Environment and Active Populations (BEAP) Lab. The position is a one-year appointment with the potential for renewal.
The successful candidate will work on projects related to Dr. Fuller and Ross’ research program including:
- Calculating spatial metrics for urban form in Canada including Can-ALE, Urban Sprawl, and Gentrification for the 2021 census year.
- Conducting comparative research to examine changes in urban form metrics over time in Canada
- Using longitudinal data (e.g., Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs)) to examine longitudinal associations between urban form metrics and health outcomes.
Nature of Work: Involvement in, or responsibility for:
- Conducting novel independent research
- Presentation of research results in peer reviewed journals
- Assisting faculty supervisor in guiding graduate students' research
- Collaborating with team members to initiate new projects
Education: MSc or Ph.D. in Public Health, Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, or related field
Experience: Knowledge in GIS, public health, and spatial data science.
Skills: A strong research record
- Ability to work independently
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent writing, and good oral communication skills
- Required data analysis experience:
- GIS data
- Spatial statistics
- Required programming experience:
- R, SQL, or Python
- ArcGIS or QGIS
