Primary Care Physician

Primary Purpose: The Physician works with an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to provide physical and mental health care to students, their spouses, and dependents in a wellness-focused environment. The Physician also takes part in health education and staff development activities.
Nature of Work: Physicians report to the Director of Student Wellness for administrative matters, and to the Senior Physician for clinical leadership. As a member of the healthcare team, the Physician helps to maintain and improve the physical and mental health status of students and contributes towards ensuring student success.
Accountabilities
Assess health status, and respond to illness and health risks of individuals, families and groups by employing a number of skills as follows:
- Provide medical care through evaluation and treatment of a patient’s presenting issues, obtaining a medical history, and performing a physical assessment.
- Obtain records or personal history from clients.
- Comply with approved medical record processes and documentation standards.
- Comply with the terms of the Confidentiality Agreement and handle confidential information in a manner that will support patient and employee privacy.
- Initiate laboratory tests and/or diagnostic imaging tests, interpret reports, and recognize abnormal findings.
- Provide prescriptions as needed for appropriate medical care.
- Recommend immunizations and other medical procedures as needed.
- Institute emergency procedures as required and appropriate in life-threatening situations to stabilize a client's condition or prevent further trauma until emergency medical transport arrives.
- Follow general Student Wellness Centre guidelines and protocols for medical care provision.
- Provide support to the Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses.
- Participate in health education and staff development activities.
Qualifications
Education: MD with current licensure and good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan and membership in good standing with Saskatoon Health Authority in the Department of Family Medicine. Must have Medical Malpractice Insurance Coverage (CMPA).
Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in family medicine, working with young adults and children. Must have experience with mental health assessments and diagnosis. Experience working with community health promotion and interdisciplinary teams is an asset.
Skills
- The successful candidate must be willing to work within a multi-disciplinary team in a primary health centre and relate well with all members of the university community, including international, Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ students.
- Must have an interest in mental health and illness.
- Must be willing to refer for pregnancy termination if applicable.
