Support Staff Temporary Roster
CBE Human Resources manages a roster of contingent casual on-call workers who are engaged to temporarily replace staff absences and to work on short-term projects. Work assignments may be scheduled in advance or the morning of the assignment. Roster staff enjoys the flexibility of working in schools and departments full-time or part-time with a minimum commitment of two days availability per week. Under the authority of a teacher, the purpose of this job is to act as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide curriculum support, instruction and supervision in the Construction Technology Program focused on framing, furniture making and cabinetry:
- Instructing within the Construction Technology Program.
- Providing effective assistance, modelling, guidance and support to students in the program;
- Assisting the teacher in maintaining a positive and safe environment;
- Working under the direction of the teacher to provide effective and consistent services in compliance with established quality and safety standards;
- Contributing towards the effective provision of construction technology education in a professional manner;
- Building and maintaining professional, supportive and enthusiastic commitment to students;
- Interacting positively with students in the school program by modelling and encouraging appropriate and positive behaviour;
- Contributing towards an effective positive learning environment within the school community;
- Demonstrating teamwork to contribute towards and maintain positive work relationships.
- Communicating effectively with others, and
- Maintaining a strict level of confidentiality pertaining to CBE issues and matters.

Position Description
Major Responsibilities
- In cooperation with the teacher, allocates tasks to students ensuring that students are assigned to all aspects of the Construction Technology Program. Monitors student proficiency. Serves as a resource to students demonstrating and reinforcing proper skills and techniques as well as interpretation of theory.
- Provide orientation of students to procedures, workflow and operation of tools in a shop atmosphere. Demonstrates techniques or the use of products or equipment to students, emphasizing safe practice and procedure. Coaches and mentors students in collaboration with the teacher in a team environment. Records results of work assignments.
- Provides observations on student achievement, competence and attitude to the teacher and student as required and appropriate.
- Assists the teacher in ensuring that students follow procedures related to safety and cleanliness at all times.
- In conjunction with the teacher, produces, develops and prepares instructional materials. Organizes and compiles information for classroom use. Manufactures and/or assists in the manufacturing of teaching aids as required.
- Orders supplies, products and materials to ensure smooth operation of services and student instruction on a routine basis. Obtains authorization for purchases out of the norm. Maintains an accurate inventory and record of supplies for use and customer service.
- Supervises students writing exams as required.
- Serves as a resource to the program, contributing ideas or expertise as necessary. Assists teacher in developing new methods and procedures for instruction to increase student learning and to better configure classroom requirements.
- Interacts in a positive and productive manner with students, staff, clients, general public and external suppliers to effectively communicate and build rapport to contribute towards a collaborative learning environment.
- Performs routine maintenance of equipment and tools used in the program, according to pre-determined schedules or as required. Ensures equipment and tools are properly and safely cleaned and stored.
- Assist in identifying student development opportunities and workshops.
- Remains current with industry changes, advancements and developments in the field.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the purpose and accountability of the role.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary journeyperson certificate in a construction trade plus three years related experience
- High School Diploma or G.E.D is preferred
- An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered.
- Certification in Standard First Aid is required.
- Must maintain certification and adhere to industry and safety standards.
- Experience in working with students is preferred
- Knowledge of sub-trades used in construction and specific skills utilized in those sub-trades
- Demonstrated basic record-keeping skills to maintain cash records and to complete and track work orders.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
- The ability to promote and contribute to the objectives of the Construction Technology Program.
- Must be able to successfully establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- The ability to work effectively as a team member in cooperation with other school personnel is necessary.
- Must have the ability to establish trust and rapport with students and to exercise flexibility in undertaking a variety of assignments.
- Ability to work independently.
- Well-developed organizational and problem solving skills are necessary.
- Personal suitability.
- Note: This position requires standing, lifting, bending and/or stretching.
