The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Architectural Design. This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

This search aligns with the University’s commitment to strategically and proactively promote diversity among our community members (Statement on Equity, Diversity & Excellence). Recognizing that Black, Indigenous, and other Racialized communities have experienced inequities that have developed historically and are ongoing, we strongly welcome and encourage candidates from those communities to apply.

The successful candidate should demonstrate an ability to develop a synthesis between creative design and material innovations. The Daniels Faculty is a multi-disciplinary faculty that includes, in addition to the design disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design, also forestry and visual studies — each discipline is represented in undergraduate, graduate professional, and PhD research programs. We seek candidates whose research and/or creative professional activity, and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing strengths and will thrive in this multi-disciplinary environment. The successful candidate should show a strong commitment to engaging in an area of research that addresses the relationship of architectural design to such topics as contemporary technology, ecology, urbanism, and culture.

Candidates must have earned a Master's degree in Architecture (M.Arch) with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and/or creative professional activity, and teaching as appropriate for their stage of career.

Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in research and/or creative professional activity which can be demonstrated by:

  • the submitted research statement,

  • authored or edited books and book chapters,
  • exhibitions in recognized venues,
  • participation in research projects,
  • presentations at academic conferences,
  • awards and accolades,
  • strong endorsements by referees of high standing.

The research statement might also include confirmed upcoming events, articles and papers accepted for publication, and ongoing research in progress.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments and the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample course materials, teaching evaluations, as well as strong recommendation letters. Other teaching-related activities can include:

  • Publications in recognized pedagogy journals,
  • Performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor,
  • Examples of student work,
  • Experience in leading successful workshops or seminars,
  • Student mentorship demonstrated in publications authored by students under the candidate’s supervision.

We are looking for a candidate with a demonstrated capacity to advance knowledge of speculative and creative forms of architectural design in a way that contributes meaningfully to the diverse population and intellectual milieu at the Daniels Faculty. Candidates must have the ability to contribute to the enrichment of undergraduate and graduate programs at the Daniels Faculty. These programs include the Bachelor of Arts in Architectural and Visual Studies; professional Masters programs in Architecture, Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Visual Studies.

The position will include opportunities for the candidate to collaborate with UofT colleagues in Planning/Geography, Art History, History, Environment, Computer Science, Engineering, and Public Health, among others, as well as operational staff, and external academic and non-academic partners. University of Toronto faculty have access to the Canadian Research Councils, which offer grants and research funding opportunities that are unique within North America.

Set within a preeminent research university and located at the center of one of North America’s most cosmopolitan cities, the Daniels Faculty uniquely combines the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, visual studies, and forestry in undergraduate, professional, and advanced graduate programs. The Daniels Faculty explores the intersections between nature, technology, architecture, and various built and natural geographies in a way that situates design, art, and forestry to meet their contemporary challenges. An emphasis on the connections between the various disciplines at the Faculty is apparent in the scholarly research and built work of many of our faculty.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online. Applicants must submit a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a research statement outlining current and future research and/or creative professional activities; representative examples of publications, research, and design work; and a teaching dossier to include a strong teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations or evidence of superior performance in other teaching-related activities as listed above.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each referee the day after an application is submitted. Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that referees submit recent letters (on letterhead, dated and signed) by the closing date. More details on the automatic reference letter collection, including timelines, are available in the candidate FAQ.

All application materials, including recent reference letters, must be received by January 13, 2025. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
