Job Profile

Under the direction of the Manager, Marketing & Branding, the Graphic Designer plans, analyzes, and creates a variety of marketing and communications materials adhering to the standards laid out in the City of Winnipeg Brand Manual. These materials support the strategic delivery of a diverse range of City services, programs, projects, and initiative. The position is responsible for the production of a number of City of Winnipeg publications, including reports, plans, newsletters, calendars, brochures, booklets, posters, pamphlets, emails, forms, invitations, signs, certificates, advertising components, infographics, and exhibition displays. The Graphic Designer finds the most effective way to communicate messages through print and digital media using colour, type, illustration, photography, and other layout techniques.

As The Graphic Designer You Will

  • Design and produce a wide variety of print and digital material, such as reports, plans, newsletters, calendars, brochures, booklets, posters, pamphlets, emails, forms, invitations, signs, certificates, advertising components, infographics, and exhibition displays for City departments, special operating agencies, the Mayor’s Office, and Council.
  • Provide support to Printing Services to allow for the efficient printing of City material.
  • Liaise with internal service departments for graphic design needs.

Your Education And Qualifications Include

  • Fine Arts Degree or two (2) year diploma program in Graphic Design, Visual Communications or Commercial Arts with a recognized Technical College or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of prior related work experience.
  • Experience and proficiency in planning, design, and production for a variety of media (or applications), with an excellent understanding of pre-press, print design, and production.
  • Prior experience in photography is preferred.
  • Experience with a wide variety of software applications with cross-platform knowledge, is required, including Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat).
  • Experience in the pre-press process, and preparing files for both print and digital media.
  • Advanced skills in graphic design and communication strategies incorporating the principles of typography, composition, layout, illustration, photography, and accessibility.
  • Excellent design sense, along with a methodical attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective, positive relationships with internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, analyze, create, and implement visual communication solutions from conception to publishing/posting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and function effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to initiate, plan, and complete assignments with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Ability to think critically, problem-solve, pivot, prioritize, and coordinate to accommodate deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, with demonstrated ability to work in a high-stress, multi-task environment involving tight deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality.
  • Willingness and ability to stay current with emerging software, design and industry trends within the creative community.
