Position Description
Purpose and Accountability
The purpose of this job is to support students in obtaining and/or maintaining an optimum level of physical function; facilitating students’ access to and meaningful participation in their educational program.
Major Responsibilities
- Determines nature and extent of student’s motor abilities.
- Assesses current physical status, functional mobility and participation in classroom activities; provides educationally based programs to promote independent motor and mobility skills.
- Integrates information from multidisciplinary perspectives (school, community, medical) to support the development of functional/physical adaptations and programming.
- Evaluates and identifies areas of need for physical access to the school and playground; facilitates functional participation in daily living skills.
- Provides suggestions, demonstrations/modelling and in-services for enhancing student(s) motor function and mobility in a variety of school environments.
- Serves as a resource and support to teachers in the adaptation of curriculum, classroom materials and activities to meet the needs of students.
- Trials, recommends, and orders specialized equipment (adapted desks & seating; wheelchairs; walkers; standing frames, etc.).
- Trains and provides ongoing support to staff on safe lifting and transfer techniques, including equipment use (e.g., track lifts).
- Maintains an awareness of current trends and developments and continues to upgrade skills and knowledge to support the educational program plan.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Must hold a minimum of a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy (or equivalent) and have a minimum of 4 years’ experience working as a Physical Therapist.
- Must be an active registered member of the Physiotherapy Alberta College.
- Experience working on a multidisciplinary team that maintains an educational perspective.
- AADL authorizer status an asset.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
- An ability to integrate perspectives from multiple disciplines into educational program plans to be implemented in the classroom.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be able to function with a minimum of support and supervision.
- Personal suitability.
This position requires personal transportation to conduct job responsibilities.
Conditions of Employment
Police Information Clearance: Applicants new to the Calgary Board of Education who are offered employment must complete and pass a police information clearance before employment is confirmed.
