What It Takes

This position involves working on the Changing the Conversation project, which aims to support those with lived experience of housing insecurity to advocate for various forms of housing justice. The role includes doing literature reviews, supporting qualitative research, attending project events, and working on other various tasks relevant to the project.

  • Performing background research using the resources of Douglas College
  • Meeting and corresponding with supervisor and other project participants to share and discuss research findings
  • Helping with qualitative research or project activities.
  • Contributing to written outputs for the broader research project on housing justice
  • Working on student-led projects on the theme of housing justice mutually agreed upon with supervisor.
  • The ideal candidate will have some interest in at least two of the following academic disciplines: philosophy, urban geography, politics, psychology, history, or the arts
  • Successful completion of any course in the above disciplines with a B+ or higher grade
  • Lived experience of housing insecurity, broadly understood, or experience working with populations experiencing different forms of housing insecurity would be an asset
  • The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term; OR
  • The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term; OR
  • The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term
  • The international student is enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College, throughout the academic year; OR
  • The international student, who is not a Douglas College student, but is an international student at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C., has a valid Study Permit that has the notation – “May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.” Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.

An original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and an original Study Permit are required by law before commencing work at Douglas College. Qualified Douglas College students meeting the above criteria will be given first preference over students of other qualifying institutions.

Additional Information

The position is located at the New Westminster campus, though some activities will occur off-campus in New Westminster at project partner sites. Hours of work: up to a maximum of 20 hours/week. The work terms for this position are:

  1. Winter 2025: January 6, 2025 – April 25, 2025
  2. Summer 2025: May 6, 2025 – August 18, 2025
