CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA

Physician Support and Wellness’ (PSW) departmental mission is to foster and champion physician wellbeing, while mitigating medico-legal risk, supporting the delivery of safe medical care, and promoting principles of equity, diversity and inclusion. Through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, the department uses a multi-pronged approach to support members and promote physician wellbeing at the individual and systemic levels.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Member Support Program (MSP) was developed by the CMPA to further enhance its assistance to members, including those who have a pattern of recurring or increasing frequency of medico-legal events. The support offered to members includes individualized guided reflection, educational advice, and coaching. The MSP assists members to identify strategies to reduce their medico-legal risk, provide safe medical care, and practice with greater confidence, while also supporting members’ wellness and being attentive to issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The Physician Advisor, Member Support Program, (PA, MSP) will play a key role in the delivery of the Member Support Program. This includes, but is not limited to, reviewing medico-legal case histories, speaking to members, developing personalized action plans, and providing ongoing longitudinal support to members participating in the program. In addition, the PA, MSP will also participate in the delivery of some PSW wellbeing initiatives.

The PA, MSP will report directly to the MSP Physician Program Lead.

POSITION ACTIVITIES

Member Support Program

  • Participate actively in Member Support Program team activities
  • Review medico-legal case histories to identify factors that may contribute to a member’s medico-legal risk
  • Communicate with members to obtain their perspective on their medico-legal history, practice environment, workload, and well-being; discuss steps taken or potential strategies to address risk
  • Work with the team to develop and draft a personalized action plan for each member, based on the medico-legal case review and the member’s input
  • Provide ongoing support to members to support their wellbeing and to identify and apply strategies to improve their practice and decrease their medico-legal risk
  • Participate in coaching to support members in the program, as appropriate
  • Identify new opportunities to support members with increased risk of medico-legal issues

Support PSW Team Operations

  • Participate in the delivery of activities supporting CMPA physician staff wellbeing, such as group peer support.
  • Participate in the delivery of activities supporting member wellbeing outside of the MSP program, such as one-on-one peer support to members experiencing significant acute distress in relation to medico-legal issues
  • Collaborate closely, as appropriate with the Business Planning and Effectiveness Team on related projects
  • Work collaboratively with the EDI office to increase awareness and understanding of the strategic direction on EDI
  • Promote a healthy culture and work environment within the engaged team, department, and across the physician workforce and the CMPA
  • Keep abreast of Association policies and practices, and developments in risk management, patient safety and the medical profession on the Canadian and international stages to maintain the highest standard in the provision of up-to-date and meaningful education and advice:
  • Participate in identifying and implementing improvements to processes and practices
  • Actively participate in department/team meetings and activities, and support department/team decisions, goals and objectives
  • Perform project work and/or participate on departmental/cross-departmental working groups
  • May participate in stakeholder relations activities as delegated by senior management

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A degree in medicine with license to practice medicine in Canada
  • A minimum of 10 years clinical experience is recommended
  • Experience with professional coaching is an asset
  • Experience with mentorship or educational remediation (for physicians or trainees) is an asset

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, and the ability to assume responsibility and accountability for actions
  • Organizational awareness and commitment, including an awareness of the dual responsibility to the Association and the team/department
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, team-based corporate work environment
  • Ability to organize time and work effectively, and to manage multiple and diverse priorities
  • Ability to work efficiently using multiple electronic platforms
  • Written and verbal fluency in French is an asset

POSTING DETAILS

  • We are seeking 2 Physician Advisors: 1 position mandatory Bilingual (French/English).
  • Job type: Regular Full-time
  • Starting salary for the Physician Advisor role is $237,800 – classified as a level P1
  • Location: Hybrid – Primary Remote Job. You can work from a home-based office the majority of time, with regular on-site presence at the CMPA office (up to 1-2 days per week). If you prefer to work in an office setting as your primary workspace, you can choose to work out of the CMPA’s office located in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow’s Lake.
