Role Responsibilities

Alberta Energy and Minerals has an opportunity for a results-driven leader who possesses strong relationship building abilities, political acumen and effective communication skills.

As the Director, Executive Operations, reporting to the Deputy Minister (DM) you are the main point of contact in the Deputy Ministry`s Office, and act as a liaison as well as key resource for strategic support, advice, and assistance to ministry staff, Executive Council, and other stakeholders. You respond to inquiries from the Minister‘s Office, the DM and other senior officials, complete requests for information, and provide strategic advice as well as guidance on issue resolution.

Using your systems thinking skills, you are able to support an integrated approach to the implementation of Energy and Minerals initiatives. You are responsible for aligning Energy and Minerals files across government through your extensive experience managing a diverse number of inter-related but distinct programs, and high profile/sensitive issues in an environment of sustained intensity consisting of diverse stakeholder groups who often have competing interests.

As a trusted advisor to the Deputy Minister, you contribute to the overall planning and integration activities by providing leadership and direction on the development of project management tools to support the department as well as senior executives in tracking key initiatives, policy and legislative processes. You provide strategic support, advice, and assistance to the DM and leadership team. You ensure that the DM is fully apprised of issues, initiatives, and stakeholder concerns. Your success lies in your demonstrated leadership skills in aligning ministry initiatives with government priorities.

Using your ability to develop networks and build collaborative environments, you play an active role in networking and facilitating key internal and external stakeholder relationships that can have province-wide scope. Your strong working relationships with stakeholders support collaborative issue resolution that aligns with the ministry’s and the Government of Alberta’s strategic direction and priorities.

You work in the Deputy Minister Office to coordinate timing and ensure inclusion of policy items on the agenda for Cabinet as well as other policy committees.

You drive for results by forecasting potential challenges with implementation and negotiating major issues in advance as well as by using your knowledge of the overall organization to improve performance. You initiate actions to optimize resources for the achievement of improved results.

You are agile and have experience working in a multifaceted, fast-paced environment using your well-developed verbal and written communication skills in the transfer of information to inform and influence executives as well as senior officials. Political acumen and understanding of Alberta’s political system, Government of Alberta mandates and related policies, and government structure will support your success in this role. Having excellent time management skills is of paramount importance for your success in this role.

Qualifications

A university degree in a related field and 7 years of related experience in issues management in a public sector organization is required. Leadership and management experience and excellent verbal and written communication skills are also required.

The Following Will Be Considered As Assets

  • Knowledge of GoA policy development cycle, decision-making process, and legislative procedures, as well as legislative agendas, priorities of other governments and their likely impact on Alberta priorities.
  • Experience working in an executive office/briefing senior officials.
  • Strong change management, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Experience with political/public service environment.

Notes

Hours Of Work

7.25 daily hours, 36.25 weekly hours.

8:15AM to 4:30PM (Monday to Friday).

Location: North Petroleum Plaza, 9945 - 108 St NW, Edmonton Alberta, T5K 2G6.

Other Information

This is a permanent full-time position.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo security screening.

Successful candidates will be required to disclose any business or financial interests including the owning of shares or financial investments in the energy sector to comply with the Department of Energy and Minerals’ Supplementary Code of Conduct.
