Scope

The City of Surrey is one of the fastest growing and most diverse communities in Canada and we aim to ensure that our young people are engaged and connected to their community. To help support our goal of building a Child and Youth Friendly City, we’re looking for an experienced individual who wants to make a difference in the lives of Surrey youth. This is a senior community service position, and the incumbent will be responsible for engaging with a wide variety of young people and encouraging positive connections between youth and their communities.

The Community Services Assistant 5, using a Positive Youth Development lens, will engage youth in recreational and pro-social activities that build on their strengths, and increase their sense of belonging within the community. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing relationships with youth based on mutual trust and respect, and mentoring junior staff in youth engagement. The role will include working as part of a team during regularly scheduled youth drop-ins and programming, as well as working independently.

Responsibilities

  • Engage youth through the lens of Positive Youth Development
  • Support at-risk, vulnerable, and diverse youth with complex contextual factors to be successful within a recreation setting
  • Observe and identify emerging youth related issues and implement strategies to address these concerns
  • Work with various organizations in the community and schools to develop and connect youth to recreation opportunities
  • Supervise staff and volunteers
  • Assist in planning and facilitation of staff training as required
  • Maintain the facility and equipment safe, clean and hazard-free at all times
  • Plan, implement, evaluate, measure and report on the success of youth outreach and engagement initiatives
  • Provide information to the public regarding programs and facilities in a courteous and professional manner
  • Ensure that the City’s policies and procedures are met during the performance of ongoing duties
  • Perform other job related duties as required

  • Strong interpersonal and public relations skills
  • The ability to think creatively and be innovative in your approach
  • The ability to work hands-on with youth through the lens of Positive Youth Development and Trauma Informed Practice
  • The ability to build strong relationships internally and externally in the community
  • The ability to remain calm and problem solve in the face of conflict
  • The ability to work well independently and in a team setting
  • Proven specialized skill in working with at-risk, vulnerable and diverse communities of youth

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized University or College Level program and 2 years progressively responsible experience in recreation including supervision. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Current Emergency First Aid and CPR certificate.
  • A valid BC Driver’s License with safe driving history.
  • Eligibility to register with BCRPA in relevant Specialty or an acceptable equivalent.
  • High Five certification (or willing to obtain within 6 months) or an equivalent.
