Disney Cruise Line (DCL), a division of the Walt Disney Company, operates a six-ship fleet of premium class cruise liners and is the industry leader in family vacations at sea. DCL Entertainment (Toronto) acts as the rehearsal headquarters for DCL’s award-winning theatrical productions, creating memorable family entertainment with legendary Disney storytelling.
Based in Toronto, the Puppet Specialist provides training in puppetry skills including lip sync, blocking, movement, choreography, and expression for DCL shows. They maintain creative intent and show quality in collaboration with the DCL Creative Team and onboard Entertainment teams.
Responsibilities:
- Teach and direct puppet and articulation skills, character development, staging, and puppet choreography for DCL productions, including theatrical productions, deck parties, and character programs.
- Collaborate with the Resident Director, Dance Supervisors, and Character Managers on puppet-related issues.
- Engage with a range of Disney professionals including WDW Puppet Masters, WDI Creative Directors, and DCL Talent Casting.
- Maintain Disney creative standards, ensuring show quality and character integrity.
- Provide performance notes to puppeteers and communicate issues to Entertainment Operational Management and Creative partners.
- Oversee puppet maintenance, repairs, and work with external vendors to maintain puppet repertoire.
- Conduct workshops, auditions, and rehearsals for puppeteers, assisting with scoring candidates.
- Support ongoing show quality efforts and provide feedback on puppet maintenance.
- Travel for cast crossovers and replacements depending on the rehearsal schedule and operational needs.
- Manage DCL rehearsals, including scheduling and room utilization.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in entertainment performance with puppeteering or equivalent professional experience preferred.
- 7+ years experience with hand and rod puppets; knowledge of Programmed Articulated puppets is an asset.
- Experience in puppet maintenance and understanding of Disney Character brand usage.
- Willingness to travel internationally and comply with maritime guidelines.
