Position Summary:

The Director of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for the design, implementation, coordination and continuous improvement of environment, health, and safety management systems across MDA Space. This position will ensure implementation, and evaluation of, environment, health and safety standards, policy and processes consistent with our mission, purpose, values, and priorities as well as compliance with relevant regulations and requirements.

The Director of Environment, Health and Safety will provide strong leadership, coaching and expertise in environment, health and safety, to develop and mobilize common initiatives, drive OneMDA, and serve as a catalyst to promote and maintain a strong culture within MDA Space.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic direction, alignment and oversight for EHS across MDA Space.
  • Oversee EHS programs and identify best practices and foster their adoption throughout the company.
  • Act as a resource and pragmatic, business focused, subject matter expert to senior leadership and business operations.
  • Work with EHS professionals within our business areas and functional teams to build the fundamentals of health, safety and environmental responsibility across the organization.
  • Guide & develop the EHS community and culture across MDA Space and actively support the OneMDA approach.

Specific Environmental responsibilities include:

  • Environmental Strategy: Develop and partner with the business to implement a comprehensive environmental strategy aligned with the company's overall business objectives and ESG goals.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, including air quality, water quality, waste management, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Climate Change and Carbon Emissions: Develop and implement strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and mitigate climate change risks.
  • Conservation: Promote conservation initiatives, such as water conservation, waste reduction, recycling, biodiversity and ecosystem impacts that align to our business.
  • Environmental Risk Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate environmental risks, including natural disasters, pollution incidents, and climate change-related events.
  • Environmental Reporting and Disclosure: Lead the enterprise-wide preparation of environmental reports, including sustainability reports and regulatory filings based on recognized reporting standards.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies, communities, and other stakeholders on environmental matters. Partner with internal stakeholders to develop and implement ESG initiatives, ensuring alignment with MDA Space goals.

Specific Health & Safety responsibilities include:

  • Health & Safety Culture: Foster a strong safety culture through leadership, training, and communication.
  • Incident Investigation and Prevention: Investigate workplace accidents and incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Occupational Health: Manage occupational health programs, including medical surveillance, ergonomic assessments, and exposure monitoring. Partner with HR on Workers Compensation and related programs.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response: Develop and maintain emergency response plans, conduct drills, and ensure the organization is prepared to respond to emergencies, jointly with business continuity planning.
  • Industrial Hygiene: Conduct industrial hygiene assessments to identify and control workplace hazards.
  • Health & Safety Training: Lead the creation, development, and implementation of health & safety training and development programs (materials, processes, tools) for all levels in the organization, in the business areas and in the office.
  • Health & Safety Management Systems: Create, implement and maintain health & safety management systems, including all enterprise-wide standards, policies and practices, as well as the setting, tracking, reporting, and communication of relevant KPIs.
  • Employee Well-being: Partner with Human Resources to promote employee well-being through programs such as stress management, mental health support, and other initiatives.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance against Health & Safety regulations and requirements at all levels (federal, state/province, local levels).

Job Qualification Profile:

Education, Experience & Knowledge:

  • University Degree or equivalent: environmental science, occupational health, engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in EHS leadership roles in a multi-site manufacturing or high-technology company, along with demonstrated progression in leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful EHS programs. Strong knowledge of federal, state and provincial legislation, regulations & standards and Worker’s Compensation policies.
  • Knowledge of ESG principles, frameworks, and reporting standards.
  • Demonstrated experience working through others in matrix organizations, managing and facilitating internal teams.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHMM) are advantageous.
  • Knowledge of claims management and related processes is an asset.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Successful candidates must obtain and hold security clearance at the reliability status level, and pass security assessment for the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and ITAR.

The compensation range for this position is $160,000 - $180,000 annually. The specific compensation offered will be based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
