WSP is seeking Senior Fisheries Biologists to join our team in our Edmonton, Saskatoon, or Calgary offices. The successful candidates will be the senior fisheries and aquatic sciences lead and reviewer for environment assessments and permitting of remediation, mining, and linear development projects, Fisheries Act Request for Review and Authorization applications and amendments, and offsetting plans.

What you can expect to do here:

  • You will provide technical leadership in fisheries and aquatics biology, including study design, application of field techniques, statistical analysis, and report preparation.
  • You will oversee and direct fisheries assessments for multi-disciplinary projects across various sectors, including infrastructure, oil & gas, power, mining, and land development.
  • You will assess projects for federal and provincial permitting requirements and develop the necessary applications, including Fisheries Act Authorization applications and offsetting plans.
  • You will manage and prepare aquatic resources and fisheries baseline studies and effects assessments for environmental impact assessments.
  • You will manage tasks or lead projects according to approved scopes of work, delivering high-quality reports on time and within budget.
  • You will interact with clients and regulators.
  • You will prepare and undertake business development and client service activities.
  • You will liaise with the technical community of WSP professionals across Canada and internationally, participating in various projects originating from other WSP offices.
  • You will prepare proposals and design work packages in response to client needs.
  • You will offer innovative solutions to WSP clients through business development initiatives.
  • You will provide technical direction and mentoring to junior staff.


What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • University degree in Biology, Ecology or Environmental Sciences with 15 years experience or equivalent
  • Five to eight years of work experience within the Canadian Regulatory environment
  • Registration as an P.Biol and R.P.Bio
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Experience in biological consulting services
  • Experience conducting aquatic resources, fish habitat and fish community assessments, fish passage and flow needs assessments
  • Experience developing and monitoring fish habitat offsetting
  • Experience working on multi-disciplinary projects and teams, and environmental impact assessment processes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of provincial and federal regulations governing fish habitat, fish, and environmental protection
  • Strong field survey related skills and experience, including design and implementation of field programs, management and supervision of field crews
  • Planning skills for field logistics, equipment use and Health and Safety protocols
  • Experience with a variety of standard biological sampling equipment, including operating backpack and boat electrofishers, lake and river sampling experience, and boat operations
  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Based on client requirements, staff can be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Available for business travel and extended working hours, when required
