Aviva has an excellent opportunity for the position of SVP, Chief Technical Underwriter (CTU) for Commercial Lines; this role manages Aviva’s underwriting footprint across Aviva Business and GCS portfolios, setting our underwriting and reinsurance strategy, building industry leading underwriting capability, developing technical pricing capability, ensuring significant product differentiation from our peers and providing a key oversight role over trading functions.

Reporting to the two Commercial Managing Directors, this role is accountable for GI global standards including pricing, underwriting, reinsurance and customer proposition. This person will facilitate the successful implementation and execution of business strategy, as set by MDs, through areas of technical expertise, governance, learning and development, and pricing.

What You'll Do

  • This role is accountable for all technical strategies in the areas of risk concentration, governance, underwriting, pricing and reinsurance, and customer to support growth objectives and is a member of both GCS and Aviva Business Senior Leadership Teams.
  • Own exposure and reinsurance management underwriting requirements for Aviva Canada and ensure that treaty and case reinsurance arrangements are adequate to support business objectives.
  • Take ownership of product response to customer and distributor needs, regulations, and internal efficiency, aligning with Aviva's underwriting policies.
  • Deliver profitable growth in our Aviva Business and GCS books while maintaining robust controls across underwriting and pricing.
  • This role is accountable to lead all functions that will translate the output of technical underwriting and make it fit for consumption within operations.
  • Accountable to develop governance framework.
  • Strengthen underwriting fundamentals through outstanding L&D and QA functions.
  • Establish measures and controls to ensure compliance with corporate governance and federal/provincial regulations.
  • Ensure that the organization operates within the approved risk appetite framework and that the appropriate culture, governance and oversight arrangements are in place to manage effectively the risks to Aviva achieving its objectives.

What You'll Bring

  • Undergraduate degree in business, mathematics, statistics, economics, finance, or other related field or equivalent experience; coupled with 10 years of relevant P&C experience.
  • Extensive strategic and change delivery experience; ability to bring strategy to life.
  • Experience in a highly regulated environment.
  • Experience delivering change and transformation through systems and business processes.
  • The ability to recruit, develop and retain an outstanding team of professionals.
  • The ability to generate energy in others and to inspire teams to achieve business goals.
  • A high degree of humility, integrity and personal pride in doing what is right.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to work closely with and support other senior executives in the development and implementation of creative and strategic ideas.
  • Ability to identify key priorities and problems, acquire relevant information, identify root causes, and generate alternative solutions to reach sound management decisions.
  • The clear ability to fit into the Aviva team and to work effectively with other executives in the development of all strategic and operational plans, activities, and initiatives.
  • Versatility in thought process and the ability to apply critical thinking skills to identify key levers and priorities for large amounts of information.
  • Possesses the ability to balance quantitative analysis with competitor behaviors within the marketplace.
