Position Information

The Inuit Patient Navigator (IPN) is responsible for promoting access to culturally safe and respectful healthcare of Inuit patients, both from our region and from Nunavut. This will be achieved by working closely with Inuit patients, their families, community partner supports, and health professionals. The IPN will advocate for shared decision-making, facilitating access to support for spiritual and emotional wellbeing, assisting with care coordination that connects patients with helpful resources and provides a link with relevant community partners. The IPN will play a key role in ensuring Inuit patients understand decisions related to their care and follow-up plan and that the patient voice is supported. This position is part of a larger TOH strategy in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action that addresses systemic inequalities in healthcare.

This position is for the Emergency Department at the Civic Campus.

Rotation/Shifts

Days, 8 hour shifts.

Basic Requirements

  • Post-Secondary education in health or social services related field;
  • Experience working in healthcare or social services systems;
  • Advanced knowledge of Inuit culture and the history of colonization;
  • Preference will be given to Inuit enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify;
  • Self-starter who demonstrates attention to details, accountability and sound judgement;
  • Strong work ethic that includes dependability and reliability;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced environment;
  • Proven abilities in building partnerships and/or collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal;
  • Ability to work respectfully with confidential information;
  • Good problem-solving skills to analyze patient issues and recommend solutions;
  • Good knowledge of MS Office Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as ability to use office equipment efficiently (telephone, scanner, photocopier and fax);
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence and patient-focused care;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to balance conflicting demands and priorities.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Inuit communities or within an Inuit services organization;
  • Experience in preparing and delivering presentations;
  • Preference will be given to those with experience living and working in a northern community for at least one (1) consecutive year;
  • Fluency in Inuktitut is considered an asset;
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training, ASIST training, Bystander Intervention Training.
