The Weekend Logistics Leader (WLL) is responsible for the ongoing supervision and performance of the assigned Fleet Managers, Carrier Sales Coordinators, Logistics Assistants, and any other Logistics staff (students, PT staff) over the weekend for Bison Logistics. The primary focus will be to work closely with the weekend staff to monitor freight volumes, service levels, and be an escalation point as required for weekend stakeholders. The WLL will be seen as the “go-to” resource and subject matter expert to the weekend team and other stakeholders. This position requires the individual to be proactive, strategic and solutions-oriented to anticipate situations before they become inflated. The WLL will possess strong communication skills and be able to successfully interact with multiple stakeholders. This role requires a results-minded leader with strong interpersonal skills combined with a proven track record towards relationship management.

In this role, the WLL will assess the current state of weekend operations as it pertains to process, data, tools, and operational execution. They will work alongside other business units in Canada and the US to create a seamless flow from daytime operations into the weekend. The WLL will explore new ways to make our weekend operation more efficient and improve carrier experience. The WLL will find ways to increase coverage across our network, identifying gaps in departmental coverage. The WLL will be tasked with assessing how new business initiatives will affect the weekend teams and provide feedback. The WLL will also be responsible for any part-time or full-time weekend staff.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Weekend Logistics Operations: involves ensuring day to day management of the assigned Fleet Managers, Carrier Sales Coordinators, and Logistics Assistants.
  • Saturday/Sunday:
    • Facilitating morning and afternoon huddle with all weekend logistics staff to evaluate needs of the department for the day.
    • Ensuring operational items such as email inboxes, grid, tracing and sequencing are up to date for each region (CAN and US Logistics Operations), working with appropriate stakeholders to accomplish this.
    • Ensuring team members are managing calls/messages in a timely and effective manner.
    • Actioning escalation calls, emails or anything brokerage related as required.
  • Friday/Monday:
    • Attending any regional huddles that may require prep or follow up from the weekend.
    • Preparing and publishing staffing line up for the weekend to all stakeholders.
    • Reviewing customers and shipments that need extra attention over the weekend.
    • Monday recap with weekday Logistics leadership group.
    • Reporting on weekend productivity (brokerage stats, tracing stats, phone stats) and Level of Service.
    • Identify process gaps and create solutions to move forward and address with Logistics weekday leadership.
  • Problem Identification & Resolution: This involves the identification and resolution of all non-routine and time-sensitive issues that occur during weekend hours, including potential after hours calls. The WLL must prioritize each situation (emergency, non-routine, routine) and respond accordingly. The response may require immediate action and involvement of other parties as well as the delegation of tasks and issues to other members of your team. This includes but is not limited to:
  • Carrier concerns and escalations as identified by weekend staff or leadership.
  • Staffing concerns as identified by weekend staff or leadership.
  • Escalation any urgent matters to off duty managers where required.
  • Staffing: Involves monitoring and identifying coverage and performance issues. This includes:
  • Ongoing recorded evaluation of employee’s performance and providing information necessary to contribute to the employee’s performance evaluation, including work on existing areas of development.
  • Communicating employee performance to the employee,
  • Leading performance management initiatives for assigned staff,
  • Ensuring weekend schedules in Logistics meet the needs of the operation,
  • Realigning resources as required to meet the Logistics operations need. The WLL will adjust staffing to cover brokerage or tracing responsibilities with input from weekend stakeholders and leadership.
  • Reporting: The WLL will be responsible for reporting on all relevant weekend activity. This includes:
  • Sending e-mails to the appropriate parties regarding any weekend developments.
  • Reporting a daily summary on grid, tracing, sequencing and brokerage management to the department leaders. This will also include any notable issues that occurred, and any further action required.
  • Other: This involves any other duties that may be assigned from time to time, on a daily or permanent basis. Including but not limited to:
  • Freight Brokerage
  • Tracing.
