Like a language interpreter, historical interpreters help translate unique and rich histories and cultures, breathing life into times-gone-by, and creating meaningful experiences for others. You'll step into the shoes of history, dressed in period attire at Fort Edmonton Park, in one of our historical areas, showcasing your strengths, enlightening others, and championing truths about an important part of our history. Through storytelling, demonstrations, and interactive activities, you’ll share your knowledge, spark curiosity and inspire a deeper understanding of our shared past.

Successful candidates may be eligible for recall in the 2026 season
Up to 2 temporary, part-time positions for up to 5 months (May to September)
Hours of Work: Up to 39 hours per week, Monday - Sunday, weekends, evenings, and holidays, as required, from May to August. Weekends in September
Salary: $19.219 - $23.787 (Hourly)

What will you do?
- Interpret Edmonton and Western Canada’s Black history for visitors through conversation, re-enactment, role-playing, tours, activities, and demonstrations
- Lead and participate in large-scale interpretive programs, including historical talks, dramatic vignettes, and special event activities. Respectfully and inclusively navigate the scope of public questions and perspectives while acknowledging your right to do the same.
- Assist in supporting and mentoring colleagues and volunteers
- Assist with high-volume special events
- Assist in the maintenance of artifacts and program supplies
- Collect statistical information and document programs
- Lead programs for pre-registered groups
- Participate in outreach, media engagements, public events, and other functions
- Complete other duties, as required
- Completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalent
- Some experience with program delivery for the general public, tour groups, children and other program users
- Completion of the first year of a recognized diploma or degree program related to performing arts, history, education, recreation and leisure studies, or museum studies (other educational backgrounds and equivalencies will also be considered)
- Knowledge of and networks within our Black community
- Some experience with related Black community networks and activities
- Experience working in a museum, cultural centre, or historic site
- Ability to converse in a second language
- Highly developed interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including the ability to manage potentially sensitive situations
- Knowledge of Edmonton and Western Canada Black history and culture

- Current Intermediate First Aid & CPR, and AED is required prior to commencing employment
- Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, as required
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
