Job Description

SUMMARY- The lead hand reports to the Head of Horticulture and will be the person in charge onsite if the Head of Horticulture is not present. It is the lead hand’s responsibility to direct and monitor horticultural tasks onsite.

This position requires some record keeping and material management, both on and offsite.

Open communication and mutual respect for colleagues, suppliers and homeowners are essential at all times.

DUTIES-

  • Follow company safety policies at all times, including correct use of PPE by all crew members.
  • Interact cooperatively and safely with all other workers onsite.
  • Ensure the crew has all necessary tools and materials prior to departing for the worksite, in order to ensure efficient use of time.
  • Ensure the objectives for the day are understood by all crew members, including routing, time management, and tasks. Onsite tasks will include weeding, pruning, edging, and installation of plants, stones, soil and mulch.
  • Demonstrate respectful and supportive leadership in order to both complete the tasks required to a high level of efficiency and excellence, and to foster positive growth of crew abilities.
  • Walk through the job site upon arrival in order to identify tasks, hazards, and potential changes to the approach or schedule.
  • Communicate and coordinate any onsite change orders with the Head of Horticulture.
  • Identify any changes or challenges at the jobsite which may require monitoring or changes in approach in the future.
  • Walk through the job site prior to departure to ensure that all tasks have been completed, tools are returned to the truck and stowed safely, work site is tidy and safe, and gates have been closed.
  • Communicate with the homeowner in a respectful and effective manner, including any needed updates or advice.
  • Consistently log time onsite and oversee lunch/break times.
  • Communicate with the Head of Horticulture at the end of each work day.
  • Maintain a valid G drivers license in good standing.

Qualifications/ Skills Required-

  • At least one year in horticulture maintenance or related activity.
  • Possess a valid G license.
  • Standard First Aid - certification.
  • Solid written, verbal, and technological communication skills.
  • Excellent weeding, edging, planting and pruning skills.
  • Consistent time management skill
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Thorough knowledge of plant material, pests and potential disease challenges.

WORK CONDITIONS-

  • Work is outdoors typically from March to December, Proper outerwear for current climate conditions is essential for both the safety and performance of the employee.

Certain aspects of the job are physically demanding and repetitive. Employees should be in good physical health and free from any sort of chronic pain in which continuous physical activity will aggravate any conditions.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE-

Contracts are affected by the weather, a typical workday is ~8-10hrs per day, Mon-Fri.

During Jan/Feb employees may not have work.

Compensation

$22 to $25/hour
