Position: Temporary Young Parent Support Worker (maternity leave coverage)
Salary: $29.00 per hour
Location: 40 Begbie Street, New Westminster, B.C.
Hours: 35 hours per week
Job Type: Full-time, temporary (approx. 12 months – extent of mat leave)
Job Summary
Provides an array of support services to mitigate the risks for young parents and improve life outcomes for both the young parent and their child(ren). Conducts assessment, service planning, and implementation for clients of the program, while working in collaboration with other service professionals in the community involved with the young parent family. The position aids clients in identifying, understanding, and overcoming personal/family challenges, and in establishing and achieving realistic goals, with special focus on parenting skills and child development. Services are provided on an outreach basis.
Duties
- Engages with pregnant or parenting youth/young adults in the community on an outreach basis.
- Works from a person-centered, strengths-based approach with families to prepare case histories, assess strengths and challenges, prepare service plans, deliver a range of services, and evaluate interventions. Refers clients to appropriate programs, as necessary.
- Plans, prepares, and conducts individual or group support sessions with parents and their children.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of community resources to meet clients’ needs. Provides liaison, education, and advocacy to clients, other professionals, and the community.
- Maintains accurate client files. Ensures that all required documentation is complete and meets professional standards. Completes reports and statistical gathering as required.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or diploma in the social sciences.
- Minimum of one year previous work with youth, young adults, and/or young parents. Experience in an early childhood environment beneficial.
- Experience working with families from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Strong verbal and written communication, and problem solving skills.
- Knowledge of child development, positive parenting, and family dynamics.
- Good organization, time and case management skills.
- Current First-Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certifications.
- Bilingual or Multilingual an asset.
- Vehicle required; valid Class 5 driver’s license is beneficial.
- As a condition of employment, all employees must pass a Criminal Records check.
