Purpose

To provide holistic nursing care in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario, organizational and unit standards, as well as participate and collaborate with other health care providers in provision of patient care. The RN Team Lead is responsible for making clinical decisions and exercising judgment to ensure the best possible nursing care is provided within available resources.

Duties

  • Manages daily patient assignments and adjusts them as needed throughout the shift.
  • Helps staff organize their workload and establish priorities.
  • Supports nursing staff in planning and delivering patient care.
  • Evaluates the need for Constant Care or Close Observation.
  • Assesses patient acuity and unit staffing
  • Participates in various tasks as assigned by the Manager/Supervisor.
  • Provides prompt initial response to patient and family concerns.
  • Facilitates communication with unit staff and other departments.
  • Collaborates with case managers and unit staff regarding admissions / transfers and appropriate placement of patients within the department.
  • Serves as a resource for nursing and clerical staff
  • Assists, as necessary, with emergency situations on the unit and responds or delegates response to emergency situations.
  • Provides assistance in planning corrective actions to ensure safety for patients and staff.
  • Manages daily flow of the unit and attends bed management meetings.
  • Ensures daily rounds with multi-disciplinary staff is completed in a timely and effective manner.
  • Performs other duties as required in the specific department.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Competence. In good standing with the CNO
  • Minimum of 5 years nursing experience in acute surgical is required
  • Demonstrated competencies with BCLS
  • Competent in IV therapy inclusive of central lines.

Knowledge & Ability

  • Demonstrated clinical competency in planning and providing care for medically complex patients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and competency with, Infection prevention and control practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and competency with, health and safety requirements
  • Proficiency in Meditech and Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner, both in person and on the telephone
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills; able to multi-task and prioritize tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to handle stressful situations well
  • Ability to function as a staff nurse in full capacity when required, including ability to push/ pull twenty-five pounds, and the ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time.
