We are SLR Consulting (Canada), a 600+ team of advisory, environmental/engineering, and regulatory professionals across 18 office locations in Canada. We deliver environmental and sustainability services to our clients through the integration of advisory and over 30 technical environmental and engineering disciplines to help clients address some of their most complex challenges around sustainability, we are Making Sustainability Happen.

The Role

Reporting to the Chief People Officer, with dotted line reporting to the Regional Managing Director, Canada. The People Business Partner for Canada acts as a key strategic advisor to the leadership team to deliver a people service that is tailored to the region and harmonized across SLR. The role is primarily responsible for partnering with the leadership team and global functions to align people strategies with business objectives providing strategic guidance on people calendar activities, acquisitions & integrations, employee engagement and employee relations management, to drive company performance

Key Accountabilities

Job Description


  • Partner with the business to become a ‘trusted advisor’ to senior leaders.
  • Lead the creation and delivery of strategic people plans in line with our business strategy and to build organizational and people capability.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with Global Functions (Talent, Services and Culture) to advise and guide the business on appropriate core people processes and activities, in line with SLR’s global People Calendar.
  • Provide management information and insights to enable effective management of people, cost, and risk.
  • Gather intelligence and share market trends with the business on best-in-class people management practices to influence the business strategy enabling SLR to become the preferred company to work for.
  • Ensure services and access channels to the Global Function teams are understood and working effectively within and across the region.
  • Provide expert advice and coaching to line managers on a range of policy queries and employee relations issues, including performance management and discipline.
  • Support the integration of newly acquired businesses, work with business and People team stakeholders to ensure a positive people integration experience.
  • Support with organizational design and change management processes, coach business leaders on effective implementation and strategies for successful change. Consider HR best practice with structural changes and compliance requirements.
  • Support projects and process improvements, working with the global People team.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:


  • Proven experience of operating as a HR Business Partner at a senior level, overseeing the full employee lifecycle
  • Strong knowledge of all provincial employment standards across Canada and human rights laws
  • Experience of working collaboratively with a 'Centres of Expertise' HR operating model (e.g. DE&I, HR Services, Learning & Development & Talent Acquisition)
  • Commercial and financial awareness and high business acumen with an understanding of the external market, company performance, market intelligence and business drivers.
  • Strong relationship and account management skills, to include negotiation, contracting, consultancy, facilitation, influencing, presentation and communication skills, and able to apply project management methodologies.
  • Able to coach senior managers including the ability to manage difficult discussions in an empathetic and compassionate manner.
  • Able to think and act strategically.
  • Experience of managing due diligence activities for potential acquisitions and integrations highly desirable.
  • Creative and innovative approach to problems and solutions, can decipher clarity from ambiguity.
  • A high impact communicator – both verbally and in writing.
  • High level of emotional intelligence.
  • Results oriented with the drive and determination to succeed.
  • A team player and highly collaborative.
  • Courageous – will step out of comfort zone.
