Our Transportation Department is looking for a dedicated Lead Hand to join the team.

Position Responsibilities

The classification recognizes the requirement for Transportation Lead Hand duties as assigned.

  • Ensuring the training and technical direction of assigned staff, the co-ordination of work and work schedules, and the efficiency and productivity of staff. Provide direction and guidance for equipment, personnel and contractors involved in maintaining assigned facilities.
  • Train, develop and manage direct performance of assigned staff in accordance with City policy and the terms of the collective agreement. Provide leadership through holding regular meetings and assigning of regular responsibilities. Provide performance assessment recommendations to supervisor.
  • Maintain safe work practices among assigned employees and ensure safe working environment. Provide training on equipment usage and safe/efficient work methods.
  • Promote effective employee relations and establish and maintain effective working relations with other city employees and with members of the public.
  • Assist with related budget preparation and monitor winter programs may also be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to participate in standby rotation, shift work may be required.
  • Equipment operation will occur on an as-required basis.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Alberta Driver's License (Class III with Air Brakes Endorsement)
  • Standard First Aid with CPR
  • Experience as a Crew Chief/ Lead Hand in Transportation
  • Directly related work experience in a similar work environment/facility is essential
  • May be required to participate in standby rotation
  • Shift work will be required
  • Equipment operation will occur on an as-required basis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate tactfully and effectively in person and on the telephone
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise mature judgment in dealing appropriately with staff and with members of the public are also required.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in all aspects of Transportation Services field activities
  • Knowledge of cost control/expenditure monitoring and customer service is important
  • Knowledge of computers and related applications is desirable

Hours

The standard workweek consists of an average of 40 hours, with the specific schedule being determined by the immediate supervisor.

Compensation

Starting Salary $43.16 per hour as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
