The Delivery Operations Manager is responsible for managing the timely and efficient delivery of all contract and commercial customer orders across assigned Staples Canada and Staples Professional fulfillment centers. This includes overseeing fleet acquisition and maintenance, managing overflow third-party delivery, and optimizing routes. The role ensures that deliveries meet customer satisfaction goals by maintaining safety, efficiency, and accuracy standards while adhering to budgeted guidelines. Additionally, the manager collaborates with the Transportation Director, Carrier Management team, and direct reports to develop strategies for achieving daily, weekly, and monthly customer service and financial targets. With a focus on continuous improvement, the manager fosters a highly engaged, safe workforce, coaches’ associates, and implements process improvements to drive operational excellence. Balancing fleet and dedicated courier responsibilities, the role requires strong leadership, effective cost management, and a commitment to meeting service goals while driving performance across both areas of responsibility.

Specifically, You Will
- Implement, and support National and Regional Transportation strategies and programs consistent with the Canada philosophy.
- Confers with Trans Director and Transporation Mgr/Supvr. to improve transportation services to customers.
- Determines optimal equipment utilization and all other transportation and logistics opportunities in the fleet footprint.
- Reduces delivery expense as a percent to sales by implementing or managing for results the following tools or systems at each division: Use of Descartes, GeoTab and Shiptrack, Proof-of-Delivery (POD), Shipping Systems; Route Profitability Analysis; Analysis of Maintenance Expense and the resulting cost/km; and Management of Delivery Synergy Tool Kits to drive towards cost savings.
- Oversees Staples fleet drivers, managing the services, safety performance and productivity performance of the delivery fleet operations.
- Interacts independently with third party couriers to identify and implement operations best practices.
- Partners with Carrier Management to assess and on-board courier partners. Typical contract is 3 years for courier partners.
- Partner with sales teams as required resolving existing issues and developing new business opportunities.
- Work with Trans Ops Support to establish capacity management controls, routing needs and Lowest Cost Algorithm settings as required to optimize courier performance and ensure consistent service levels within the market while maintaining the required balance between service and overall cost to Staples.
- Liaison with FC leadership and functional owners to ensure support of courier operational needs (line hauls, sorts, etc.) while maintaining the lowest possible Staples operations cost.
- Manages last mile delivery for 3 SDO’s and multiple courier locations on average (different locations within Alberta and Saskatchewan).
- Strategic in process development, tactical in daily delivery completion and delivery orientation in balancing courier versus UPS modality.
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a related discipline (i.e. logistics, engineering or business).
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills required.
- High degree of experience and comfort with various warehouse and delivery technologies (GPS, MPOD, etc.).
- Experience and working knowledge of transportation systems and processes, productivity standards and technology.
- 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in fulfillment/delivery/logistics operation and fleet management. (Minimum 2-3 years at management level).
