Reporting to the AVP of Labour Relations, this role collaborates closely with the AVP, other operational leaders, and external stakeholders to ensure effective labour relations practices. The position focuses on supporting collective agreement administration, grievance resolution, investigations, labour negotiations, and maintaining compliance with provincial legislation, all while supporting the organization’s strategic goals.

As our new Director of Labour Relations you will support our Villages with:

Labour Relations Management

  • Act as a trusted advisor on labour relations matters, including collective agreement interpretation, union communications, and dispute resolution.
  • Partner with the AVP of Labour Relations and Village leaders to ensure consistent administration of multiple collective agreements.
  • Provide expert guidance to leaders on labour relations strategies and best practices to promote positive union partner and leadership relationships.

Negotiations & Collective Bargaining

  • Assist the AVP of Labour Relations in developing and executing negotiation strategies for collective bargaining.
  • Prepare proposals and supporting materials in collaboration with leadership.
  • Participate in negotiations, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and compliance with Ontario labour laws.
  • Document and communicate outcomes to ensure smooth implementation of agreements.

Grievance And Dispute Resolution

  • Investigate, analyze, and resolve grievances in partnership with the AVP, site leaders, and union representatives.
  • Represent the organization at arbitrations, mediations, and labour board. hearings, with support from the AVP and legal counsel as needed.
  • Proactively identify and address workplace issues to minimize grievances and promote a positive work environment.

Compliance & Training

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable provincial labour legislation, including the Ontario Labour Relations Act and Employment Standards Act.
  • Stay updated on labour-related trends and legislative changes, recommending adjustments to policies and practices.
  • Deliver training and resources for leaders on collective agreement administration and effective labour relations practices.

Collaboration & Reporting

  • Collaborate with the AVP, Human Resources, operations, and legal teams to ensure a cohesive approach to labour relations across all locations.
  • Maintain and analyze records of grievances, arbitrations, and other labour relations activities, providing insights to leadership.
  • Contribute to the development of labour relations strategies and metrics reporting to support organizational goals.

To be successful as our new Director of Labour Relations, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Labour Relations, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Certification in Human Resources (eg. CHRP/CHRL) is an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in labour relations, preferably in healthcare or senior living sector.
  • Proven experience working with multiple unions and collective agreements.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario's labour laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, legislation and regulations applicable to the long-term care sector, including the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021 and Health & Safety Act of Ontario.
  • Interpersonal and empathy skills and ability to be flexible, adaptable, and approachable to foster strong and positive relationships with others.
  • Ability to ensure high level of accuracy and attention to detail in their own work, data entry and documentation.
  • Ability to provide a positive customer experience for our residents, families and team members.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and properly plan for and allocate the right amount of time and effort to complete tasks. Remains calm and manages stress appropriately.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment by soliciting and sharing information, collaborating with others on providing care to residents, taking accountability for their tasks and supporting group decisions.
  • Oral and written communication skills by listening to others, sharing information, coaching others, ensuring clarity of direction/instructions and documenting care notes.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient computer skills to update care plans in the current system.
