HOURS OF WORK:
The stated hours of work are approximate as schedules are subject to change with the operational needs of the Health Centre. Changes made to hours of work will follow the terms of the applicable collective agreement, company policy and/or legislation.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Psychosocial oncology focuses on a holistic approach to cancer care, addressing the social, psychological, emotional, spiritual and functional aspects of the patient journey within a multidisciplinary team and service providers from various care settings.
Cancer can have a significant life changing effect on individuals and their families. Social work provides service to patients and their families focusing primarily on the psychological and emotional wellbeing of individuals as they adjust to the changes in their health. Social Work advocates on behalf of patients and families as they move through the health care system in their cancer journey.
Responsibilities include: As a valued member of the health care team, practicing within a patient and family centered collaborative approach, the social worker will provide comprehensive psychosocial assessment and counseling support to address the challenges of adjusting to cancer diagnosis and treatment within the oncology clinic.
The position involves: individual assessments, treatment planning, crisis intervention limited case management; education and group supports to patients and family members in an individual/ family and group setting. Flexibility to provide services in person or virtually (phone or OTN). Social Workers provide the controlled act of psychotherapy in accordance with the hospital’s practice of the controlled act of psychotherapy and the college (OCSWSSW) practice guidelines for performing the controlled act of psychotherapy and the CCO psychosocial oncology goals.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
- Master’s Degree in Social Work required.
- Member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) in good standing.
- Membership in OASW is considered an asset.
- Recent clinical experience in oncology and palliative care is strongly desired.
- Completion of the de Souza IPODE: Interprofessional Psychosocial Oncology course is required.
- Completion of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy (CBT) certificate considered an asset.
WHO YOU ARE:
- Significant experience in both a hospital and outpatient/clinic setting or working with complex psychosocial health problems, illness and disabilities, issues such as dying, grief and loss are considered a strong asset.
- Knowledge EPIC and Microsoft Office Suite is considered an asset.
- Proven experience with program development and implementation.
- Proven experience with development of patient education materials is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of health care facilities and community support systems, services, social agencies etc.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and proven teaching/group facilitation skills.
- Proven ability to organize workload and establish priorities effectively.
- Strong motivational interviewing skills.
- Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with patients, various institutions, agencies and all levels of staff.
- Commitment to providing culturally sensitive services for patients and families, which address health from a holistic perspective (including physical, emotional, social, economic, spiritual and environmental influences on health).
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
