Located on Vancouver Island just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) is in the ancestral and unceded territories of First Nations including the Quw'utsun, Malahat, Ts'uubaa-asatx, Halalt, Penelakut, Stz'uminus, Lyackson, Pauquachin, Ditidaht, and Pacheedaht Nations. Local First Nations Peoples have stewarded the lands, waters, plants, and animals of this region since beyond time immemorial. The CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 95,000. The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications from prospective internal candidates as a regular full-time Radio Systems Technician in the Emergency Management Division within the Community Services Department.
Reporting to the Emergency Telecommunications Coordinator, the Radio Systems Technician provides a wide range of technical support for the Regional Fire Dispatch Radio and Emergency Communications Systems. This position supports the Emergency Management Division by sharing technical and subject matter expertise as part of the Emergency Communications Team and participating in the Emergency Operations Centre as required during an emergency. The Radio Systems Technician keeps abreast of technology developments and helps ensure the emergency communications system is robust, resilient, and sufficiently redundant to ensure communications during a wide range of emergency events.
Guaranteed 35 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday, 830 a.m. to 430 p.m., and is eligible for flex time. This position may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings. Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the CVRD has a Work From Home program. This program allows staff to work remotely, with the number of remote days per week determined by operational requirements, from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a CVRD worksite. This position works from the CVRD's satellite office located in Duncan, BC, and at this time, is eligible to be part of the Work From Home program, potentially working a hybrid in-office / remote schedule after a successful in-office training period.
Wage rate in 3 steps as per the Collective Agreement between the CVRD and CUPE Local 358, $48.67 - $50.14 - $51.58 per hour (2025 rates). Benefits are included as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.

- Technical diploma in radio communications, telecommunications, instrumentation, information technology, or a related field.
- Industry specific training in Motorola, Kenwood, CODAN is an asset.
- Motorola R56 Communication Site Standards training is an asset.
- Incident Command System (ICS) or Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) training is an asset.
- A minimum of 5 years related hands-on field experience with VHF, UHF and/or HF radio systems.
- Experience in computer modelling related to two-way and microwave radio communications.
- Experience with the installation, repair, and ongoing maintenance of applicable radio repeater systems including all associated hardware and equipment such as towers, support structures, cabling, solar power systems, and remote site monitoring and enclosures.
- Experience with amateur radio systems and equipment.
- Experience in a local government work environment is an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
