Duties:
Providing executive level administrative support to the Associate Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench, the incumbent must possess strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively while acting as a liaison with members of the judiciary, the legal profession (including international, federal and provincial organizations/agencies), senior court staff, and various other stakeholders. While working with minimum supervision, the judicial assistant to the Associate Chief Justice undertakes a leadership role with the team of judicial assistants within the Court of King’s Bench. Daily duties include managing the security of confidential judicial material; preparation of correspondence, memoranda, practice directions, and various documentation for court files; scheduling meetings; preparation of reasons for decision; maintaining statistics; researching and reviewing legal texts; maintaining files and other related administrative duties. Works primarily independently and with minimum supervision but also works within a team environment. May be assigned to work with puisne judges as well. Note that this is a non-represented position.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Successful completion of a legal administrative training program or equivalent post secondary education.
- Extensive experience performing a full range of executive level administrative duties within a court or legal environment which may include typing and preparing complex legal/court documents and correspondence; maintaining electronic filing and bring forward systems; scheduling meetings.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with the judiciary, legal profession, general public and other stakeholders with an emphasis on diplomacy, tact and confidentiality.
- Knowledge of financial and budgetary policies which includes expense claims.
- Excellent written communication skills with an understanding of the rules of grammar, punctuation and syntax.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Excellent proofreading and editing skills with a strong understanding of the proper case and statute citation standards.
- Organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure and meet workload demands and deadlines.
- Ability to use own initiative and make independent decisions using discretion.
- Experience using legal research applications such as Quicklaw/LexisNexis and CanLII as well as conducting related Internet searches.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) or equivalent software.
Desired:
- Extensive knowledge of the court systems, King's Bench Rules, policies and procedures.
- Experience interpreting and applying legislation, regulations and policies.
- Experience with Dragon Dictation and Olympus Dictation or similar programs
