As Assistant, Distribution Center & Truck Driver, you collaborate with the Coordinator, Distribution Center and take lead from the Supervisor, Distribution Center, to ensure efficient movement of goods between UGM locations, and delivery and receipt of donations and guest purchases. You provide great customer service in a variety of pickup and delivery situations, being a positive example to interns, helping to find ways to make the movement of goods more efficient, and the physical activity of moving goods. You will provide an efficient and positive experience in the movement of goods. You will collaborate with the Social Enterprise team to provide safe, timely and courteous service.

This is a permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week) position. The starting range for this position is $19.60 to $21.42 per hour.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Distribution Center

  • Ensure daily responsibilities are carried out in an efficient professional manner.
  • Help load and prepare the truck for deliveries and pickups, including double-checking all orders, receipts, and paperwork.
  • Ensure professional pickup and delivery of Thrift Store donations and sales with Thrift Store truck.
    • As a representative of UGM to donors, provide courteous and respectful customer service to individual and corporate/business donors while picking up donations or delivering goods.
    • Assist in the scheduling and coordination of 8-10 pickups and/or deliveries per day, including route planning.
    • Act as the primary navigator while the Thrift Store Driver drives, utilizing GPS navigation tools such as Google Maps, and noting any pickup/delivery details in the paperwork.
    • While on the truck, sort through donation and/or receipt paperwork and call donors/customers shortly before arriving for pickup/delivery, coordinating final pickup/delivery details while the Thrift Store Driver drives.
  • Assemble donations/furniture as received.
  • At the direction of the Supervisor, Distribution Center, sort donations in collaboration with the Coordinator, Distribution Center.
Truck Driver

  • Drive and maneuver a GMCW 5500 3 ton box truck tilt cab.
  • Respond to phone, email or in-person requests and evaluate donations in a kind and courteous manner.
  • Schedule and coordinate 8 - 10 pick-ups and deliveries a day by using GPS routing efficiently.
  • Load and unload donations of all kinds. This includes furniture, household items, and large items, from community members' homes and vendor partners.
  • Load and unload deliveries to community members who have purchased large items from our Thrift Store.
  • Keep an accurate driver’s log and report monthly pick-ups and deliveries.
  • Maintain the Thrift Store truck, ensuring smooth operation and cleanly appearance.

General

  • Attend daily staff devotionals and staff meetings as necessary.
  • Maintain a positive, productive, and professional relationship with UGM staff from various teams and locations.
  • Adhere to all UGM published policies, practices and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Minimum two years customer service experience demonstrating a proven ability to engage customers, staff, volunteers, donors, and others in a positive, professional, welcoming manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive a 3 ton box truck tilt cab. A driving test will be administered by UGM Maintenance staff. Minimum 2 years’ truck driving experience preferred.
  • 1-3 years combined experience in areas such as warehouse, delivery, logistics, shipping, moving, and/or commercial driving.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract.
  • Consideration may be given to alternate combinations of lived experience and education.
  • Proven ability to problem-solve, with the ability to evaluate the current situation, respond quickly to changing requirements, and execute accordingly.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced setting, multitask and prioritize.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Able to lift over 50 lbs. on a regular basis.

  • Adherence to safe lifting and other relevant safety procedures, as per Work Safe BC guidelines.
  • Intermediate English skills (verbal, reading and writing) and basic computer skills (Excel, Word and Outlook).

  • Completion of high school required.

Working Conditions

  • Work Location

Work is generally performed indoors within a retail environment, with up to 10% of the time spent outdoors in all types of weather. Work is generally performed in a vehicle.

  • Physical Requirements

Duties require extended periods of standing and/ or walking. Duties require occasional periods of climbing, pulling/pushing items, lifting/carrying items, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must understand and use safe lifting practices, and be able to lift loads of over 50lbs, as required.

  • Work Conditions

Working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Work is performed amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises. This position is required to work in an environment often dealing with clients in crisis situations brought about by diverse problems.
