At CBC/Radio-Canada, the Content Distribution team is the heart of our digital presence. We're the foundation that enables other teams to access the content, metadata, and user data needed to deliver CBC's stories and media to Canadians on any digital platform. Our mission is to federate and distribute all of CBC's content including News, Sports, and Podcasts to thousands of Canadians and global aggregators alike through fast, flexible, and scalable services built with a modern stack of Spring, Hibernate, PostgreSQL, and GraphQL.
We're looking for a Senior Backend Developer to join us. You will have the unique opportunity to apply your technical expertise and expand on your skills using the latest tools to design, develop and build features to enhance our core content and metadata services. You will be instrumental in ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality solutions, actively championing and implementing best practices in both coding and quality engineering.
This is your chance to tackle the unique challenges that come with an immense volume of in-house data, work with new and evolving technologies, and build the APIs that power our entire digital ecosystem. You are an experienced backend developer looking to apply and build upon your skills in:
- Designing, developing and maintaining the core content and metadata services used by our digital platforms
- Working with the technical leaders, developers and quality engineers to ensure code is testable, maintainable, performant and high quality
- Ensuring continuous delivery and reliability through the development of comprehensive tests, observability and adherence to best practices
- Collaborating with product leads, agile team lead and development team to assess feasibility of features and provide estimation of work efforts
- Collaborating with other teams to ensure that the entire stack of products, including UI/UX, content management, and data analytics, all function smoothly together

- The education: A Computer Science, Engineering, Math degree or equivalent is preferred, but we know not everyone gains their programming skills this way
- Knowledge and understanding of software design, development and quality engineering practices including unit, integration and end to end testing
- You have expertise using Java and experience using various backend frameworks such as Spring and Hibernate and databases such as PostgreSQL
- Experience with writing code accompanied by unit tests sufficient to ensure coverage of realistic use cases and edge cases
- You have an understanding of application flow, from the data layer to the UI
- Experience with implementation and integration of API endpoints and/or services
- Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and improvements. You can learn and share knowledge on new technologies
- You are comfortable working in an Agile environment and with iterative and incremental development
- You know how to listen and relay empathy and understanding for diverse perspectives
- You thrive in a team-focused environment
- A problem solver and good communicator who takes ownership of the work they do, see problems as opportunities, and share new ideas. A dynamic individual who loves to learn and connect with others
Must haves (with a minimum of 5 years experience):
- Expertise with Java using Spring, implementing REST API endpoints
- Expertise with SQL & relational databases e.g. Postgres
- Experience working with Data JPA e.g. Hibernate
- Experience with unit & integration testing frameworks e.g. JUnit
- Experience with an HTTP web server environment e.g. Tomcat
- Experience working on platforms such as Linux and MacOS
- Experience with GraphQL.
- Experience working with React
- Experience working with TypeScript
- Experience with version control software such as Git, Bitbucket, etc.
- Experience with Workflow / CI / CD tools such as Atlassian JIRA, Bamboo, Jenkins etc.
- Interest, experience, and/or education in cybersecurity
