The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the talented team in the Liability Management Group. This group is responsible for overseeing liability management across the entire energy development lifecycle. We ensure that industry remains accountable for site closure and that energy infrastructure is responsibly removed from Alberta’s landscape, minimizing the risk of unfunded liabilities being borne by the public. We are seeking a motivated individual with keen attention to detail and an interest in how the AER ensures the energy sector manages its environmental footprint.

As a Student, Liability Management, you will support the compliance process to ensure licensees maintain up-to-date records, assist with engagement with industry, other AER teams, and organizational leaders, and provide updates to team members on these activities.

The Liability Management Group is a multi-disciplinary team that brings together diverse perspectives, education, and experience to address complex challenges. In this role, you will have the opportunity to learn from liability experts, modellers, financial specialists, IT professionals, and environmental scientists about the multi-faceted world of energy industry liability.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Manage comprehensive files by gathering relevant information, assessing compliance with liability requirements, and developing briefing packages to support recommended regulatory actions.
  • Participate in project-based work aligned with the activities and initiatives of the Liability Management Group.
  • Assist in optimizing internal document management and record-keeping systems, including managing and updating team, project, and group SharePoint pages.
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team, gaining exposure to diverse areas of expertise.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Currently enrolled in the third year or higher of a Bachelor's program in Environment, Government Affairs, Science, Business, Oil and Gas, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with common business tools and systems, including Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and Adobe is preferred.
  • Experience working in the public or private sector is considered an asset.
  • Adaptable and quick to learn new technologies, comfortable exploring and developing competency in new systems.
  • Able to balance professionalism with a personable approach, adapting communication style as needed.
  • Effective communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
