The Opportunity
RVS invites applications for a continuing, full-time (35 hrs/wk) Financial Accountant position starting immediately at the Education Centre located in Airdrie, Alberta.
Reporting to the Manager of Accounting, the Financial Accountant plays a key role in executing core accounting functions, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting support, ensuring accurate financial records and supporting the Finance team in delivering timely and reliable information.
Responsibilities Include
- Communicates regularly with the Manager of Accounting, Director of Finance, and other Finance team members to ensure dissemination of information to all necessary parties.
- Maintains a high level of integrity and business professionalism in dealing with internal and external clients of RVS.
- Demonstrates and models a genuine appreciation for, and understanding of protocol, discretion and professionalism in RVS.
- Maintains and oversees general ledger accounts and various internal databases to ensure data integrity and accuracy.
- Guides Education Center personnel regarding RVS policy, procedure, financial budgeting, accounting, and software related queries.
- Monitors and recommends best-practices for financial internal control compliance.
- Prepares monthly journal entries to support the monthly close process.
- Ensures accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation of all entries
- Performs monthly balance sheet and bank reconciliations, ensure completeness of recorded transactions
- Investigates and resolves reconciling items and discrepancies.
- Supports weekly payment runs ensuring proper approvals and documentation.
- Assists with accounts receivable functions, including invoicing and recording receipts.
- Supports preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Assists in preparing working papers and schedules for audit and reporting purposes.
- Contributes to compilation of data for financial reports and other external reporting
- Assists in tracking budget-to-actual results for assigned areas.
- Supports preparation of variance analysis and explanations of fluctuations.
- Responds to internal inquiries related to transactions, coding, and balances.
- Provides reliable support during month-end, year-end, and audit periods.
- Supports additional tasks and special projects, including those outside core responsibilities, as required to meet departmental and organizational needs.
- Prioritizes assignments and workload to meet RVS deadlines.
- Initiates and maintains key working relationships with Education Center personnel, external auditors, and government agencies to promote efficient, consistent and collaborative practices.
- Seeks opportunities and takes accountability for personal and team results:
- Initiates and engages in cross-training to mitigate risk of business interruption
- Shares professional expertise, RVS knowledge, and lessons learned with Finance colleagues through formal and informal meetings and presentations.
- Actively engages in the planning, implementation, and training of new Finance processes and procedure.
- Understands and complies with all legal requirements for safety and health, as they pertain to the workplace
Education/Experience
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Business Administration or a related field
- 3 - 5 years of accounting and financial reporting experience
- A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of Accounting Standards (e.g. PSAS, NFP, IFRS)
- Knowledge and experience in various accounting software systems, Microsoft Office 365 and web-based applications
- Effective verbal and written communication, organization, prioritization, time-management, and problem-solving skills
- Outstanding communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Ability to work independently, as well as in collaborative team environment
- Awareness of the potential for fraud and diligence in following prescribed procedures, policies and goals of the department.
