Job Summary
We are looking for a motivated and talented individual to join our team as a Research Coordinator. The successful candidate will work on cutting-edge projects using pre-clinical models and patient samples to study and improve personalized therapies for IBD.
Organizational Status
The BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHRI) is located at the BC Children's Hospital. The research community based at the BCCHRI is comprised mostly of UBC faculty, staff, and students. It is the largest research institute of its kind in Western Canada, spanning a wide range of children's and women's health concerns. The BCCHRI conducts discovery, translational and clinical research to benefit the health of children and their families. The BCCHRI is supported by BC Children's Hospital Foundation and works in close partnership with BC Children's Hospital (BCCH), the Provincial Health Services Authority and its agencies, and the University of British Columbia.
The BCCHRI has a research budget of $70 million per year with over 300 Principal Investigators (PIs) and 1000+ additional trainees and staff. Within the BCCHR there are four major areas of research called Themes, and each Theme is comprised of 3-6 research Groups and supports 50 - 100 PIs and 250 - 350 Trainees and staff. The Clinical Research Support Unit (CRSU) supports PIs with their research programs across the Children’s and Women’s campus; PIs come from different departments within UBC’s Faculty of Medicine and other UBC faculties, SFU and the PHSA.
Position requires a working relationship with other Research staff. Accepts direction from the CRSU Senior Research Manager and ultimately accountable to the Principal Investigator.
Will work in a shared office.
Work Performed
- Develop and implement research protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Coordination and submission of research ethics and institutional approvals necessary for trial start-up and maintenance.
- Ensuring that trials are conducted in compliance with the protocol and regulatory requirements
- Implement and oversee lab safety protocols and compliance with institutional policies.
- Coordinate grant and donor funds, ensuring appropriate allocation and compliance with UBC, PHSA, and funding agency requirements.
- Oversee financial transactions, including research-related expenditures, invoicing, and reconciliations.
- Work with vendors and procurement teams to source lab supplies and coordinate purchasing processes.
- Assist in budget forecasting and grant applications, preparing supporting documentation and expenditure justifications.
- Supervise and mentor junior research staff and student employees, including recruitment, training, and performance monitoring.
- Train graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior research staff in laboratory techniques, equipment usage, and experimental protocols.
- Coordinate research projects, ensuring timely progress and effective collaboration with clinicians, research partners, and industry stakeholders.
- Executes communication strategies for research dissemination, including internal and external lab updates, scientific presentations, and collaborations with media and fundraising organizations.
- Assist in organizing research seminars, outreach initiatives, and academic events.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The successful applicant will exercise a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods, and coordinating the work of the unit. Errors made could compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the Unit, Centre, Institute and individual Investigator(s).
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.
Supervision Given
The successful applicant may oversee and direct the work of 2-3 employees at lower classifications in which case the successful applicant is responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit. The successful applicant will also act as a resource for junior trainees.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.

Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of four years of related laboratory experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience working in a laboratory environment is mandatory.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to meet short and long-term project deadlines.
- Ability to work both independently and within a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to develop and work with large clinical or research databases, including data cleaning and data analysis using statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS or STATA) is an asset.
