The Hans W. Klohn Commons is one of the four UNB Libraries and delivers core services to students, faculty, and staff, including circulation, access to library spaces and collections, course reserves, large format printing, digitization, and basic research support on the Saint John Campus. Normally the first point of contact for library users, the Hans W. Klohn Commons plays a key role in supporting student success through accessible, inclusive, and reliable services.

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Library Services Desk Manager, the Library Assistant, Digitization is responsible for serving library patrons at the Library Services Desk; contributing to UNB Libraries' digital collections by digitizing print and other materials; printing academic posters for UNB students, faculty and staff using the large format poster printer; maintaining book stacks in good working order and assisting with technical services operations, such as acquisitions, document delivery, and cataloguing.

  • Provide friendly and welcoming service at the Library Services Desk in person, by telephone, and by email; support circulation services, basic research inquiries, printing, scanning, copying, basic IT needs, directions, general information, and referrals to appropriate campus services.
  • Open and close the Hans W. Klohn Commons as scheduled.
  • Process payments for overdue fines, lost materials, document delivery services, printing, and other library-related fees.
  • Apply library policies and procedures consistently.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of borrower records.
  • Create digital assets from print collections while following specialized procedures and standards.
  • Maintain project status records and documentation.
  • Record procedures and outcomes to support continuous workflow and service improvements.
  • Collaborate with the UNB Libraries Manager, Digital Imaging on training, troubleshooting, and related activities as required.
  • Train and supervise support staff and student employees as needed.
  • Operate the large-format printer to produce posters for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with the large-format printer and maintain adequate supplies and inventory.
  • Respond to poster printing requests and related inquiries.
  • Manage billing and payment processes for poster printing services.
  • Maintain library collections through shelving, shifting, and shelf-reading activities.
  • Ensure range finders remain accurate and compact shelving systems operate effectively.
  • Manage the hold shelf, including materials awaiting pickup through document delivery services.
  • Support technical services operations, including acquisitions, document delivery, and basic cataloguing.
  • Participate in campus-wide and bi-campus committees, projects, and initiatives as assigned.
  • Complete other related duties as required.

What You Bring

  • An undergraduate university degree or library technician diploma
  • 1-3 years of experience working in public service, preferably in an academic environment

Additional Strengths

  • Experience working directly with university students would be an asset
  • Familiarity with handling of sensitive or archival materials
  • Basic experience with imaging technology; scanning and editing software, as well as working within a networked environment
