Course number and title: Sessional Lecturer - PHY250H1S – Electricity and Magnetism – Emergency Posting

Course description: An introductory course in Electromagnetism. Topics include: Point charges, Coulomb’s law, electrostatic field and potential, Gauss's Law, conductors, electrostatic energy, magnetostatics, Ampere's Law, Biot-Savart Law, the Lorentz Force Law, Faraday’s Law, Maxwell's equations in free space.

Estimated course enrolment: 92 students

Estimated TA support: TBA (TA support is contingent upon enrolment)

Class schedule:

Lectures: Tuesday 1:00pm-3:00pm and Thursday 1:00pm-3:00pm

Tutorials schedule: Tuesday 3:00pm-4:00pm and Thursday 3:00pm-4:00pm (Please note the tutorials will be led by the Teaching Assistant)

The delivery method for this course is currently in-person. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department.

Sessional dates of appointment: July 1, 2024 – August 31, 2024

Salary: Pay for half course, vacation pay included:

Sessional Lecturer I: $9,457.90
Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $9,930.79
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,121.77
Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,326.62
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,362.76
Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $10,570.02

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics required
  • Previous experience in teaching physics at the University level required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to individuals with prior experience and demonstrated ability in teaching a similar course

Description of duties:

  • Coordination of an undergraduate course
  • Preparation and delivery of lectures in this course
  • Supervision and training of teaching assistant(s) assigned to course, including overseeing the TAs DDAH forms
  • Preparation, supervision and grading of tests and examinations in accordance with University regulations; submission of final grades
  • Providing scheduled office hours for academic counseling of students
