What will you do?

Under the guidance and supervision of a Professional Engineer, you will:

  • Develop and maintain in-depth understanding and competency in all ETS communications systems
  • Review drawings and specifications and provide technical direction to various external consultants from Integrated Infrastructure Services (IIS) or hired directly by ETS
  • Initiate, design, and implement modifications or upgrades to the communication network and systems to enhance functionality, reliability, security, safety, and operational efficiency, in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the City of Edmonton under the guidance of senior engineering staff
  • Create internal documentation, specifications, and operational procedures for use by consultants, contractors, and internal parties
  • Plan and execute in-depth testing and evaluation of new technologies under consideration for deployment in various ETS projects Commission new systems either by directly performing the work or working with outside parties to ensure systems are delivered as designed
  • Perform site inspections to ensure the systems being delivered match ETS standards, specifications and accepted engineering practice
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting of applications and hardware to resolve issues with communications systems and return them to operation in a timely manner
  • Develop and manage the preventative maintenance programs for the communication equipment and systems to ensure smooth turnover of projects to operations staff
  • Identify and submit capital budget requirements, and assist in managing the capital budget approved for the Communication system area


Qualifications:

  • A degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering from a recognized university preferably with coursework in Communications/Control System/Electronics Engineering
  • Membership with APEGA as Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and working towards a P.Eng is a requirement. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
  • Minimum four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in an electrical or computer engineering environment, including networking, security, public address, industrial control systems(i.e. SCADA, ICS,PLC’s) , telephone, and radio system design, implementation, and maintenance


Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of and experience with design, construction, operation, and maintenance of communication systems; wired, wireless, Ethernet/IP based networks and MPLS; digital CCTV, public address, SCADA, telephone, and radio systems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively communicate with a wide range of both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including project managers, engineering and other technical consultants, as well as citizens and Council
  • Experience with Google G Suite and computer control and maintenance systems
  • Experience with Cisco and Nokia (Alcatel Lucent) networking equipment and network monitoring software
  • Experience with Windows Server and Linux operating systems in Virtual Environments (VMware)
  • Experience with maintaining server hardware
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and ownership of ETS communication systems
  • Ability to perform effectively under tight deadlines with multiple priorities

Assets:

  • Experience with Programming in various languages including web scripting (PHP) and C++


Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position


Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary Range: $33.638 - 40.887 Hourly; $70,236 - $85,372 Annually
