Who We Are:

Heritage Park is Canada's largest living history museum and offers visitors a chance to experience life in Western Canada from the 1860s to the early 1950s. The Park features historical buildings, costumed interpreters, working antiques, and various exhibits that provide insight into the region's past.

Job Overview:

Reporting to the Grounds Maintenance Manager and under the guidance and support of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, maintains Heritage Park grounds (promenade, pedestrian walkways, parking lots, wooded areas, grass areas and roads), ensures daily waste collection and disposal and provides support for park Special Events and Catered Events, preparing areas as required.

Responsibilities:

Grounds Equipment and Vehicle Operation

  • Operate and maintain various equipment, including skid steers (with attachments), forklifts, tractors, , and Ford F550 vehicles equipped with ploughs and sanders, adhering to safety protocol
  • Obtain and maintain required certifications for skid steer and forklift operation
  • Utilize side-by-side vehicles (e.g., John Deere, Bobcat) with blades and brushes for landscape maintenance
  • Operate a backpack blower for leaf removal and utilize attachments for lawn mowers
  • Maintain a high level of understanding of various equipment types and their appropriate uses
  • Complete OHS training for chainsaw use and participate in in-house training for other vehicles under the supervision of the Manager and Supervisor
  • Maintain and clean machinery and equipment for safe operation and condition, reporting concerns to Supervisor and Manager

Grounds Maintenance

  • Execute summer maintenance activities including watering and fertilizing all grass areas, weed controlling on grass, along roadways and around parking lots, ensuring a clean and well-maintained appearance
  • Execute winter maintenance tasks, including snow clearing through ploughing, shoveling, backpack blowing, salting, ice-melt application, and road sanding
  • Collects garbage, compost and recycling throughout the park and parking lots including picking up litter and disposing in appropriate locations
  • Supports and assists special events and catered events by preparing the areas for use including setting up and moving tents to assigned locations and providing waste disposal
  • Cut wood/kindling using, log splitter and hand tools, and deliver throughout the park, adhering to established safety procedures
  • Provide an exceptional visitor experience through friendly and courteous interactions with guests, staff, and volunteers, using polite greetings and providing information on the Park when guests inquire
  • Participate in all relevant safety training including confined space training in coordination with the mechanical department
  • Perform other duties as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of skid steer and forklift certifications is preferred; certification and training is also available through the Park
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required
  • Prior, related work experience and knowledge of operation of relevant machinery is preferred
  • Experience with basic carpentry skills is preferred
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through Police Information Check as a condition of employment.

Special Clothing and Equipment:

  • Appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park;
  • Footwear, as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department, will be provided by the employee.

Special Working Conditions:

  • The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work outdoors;
  • This position is physically demanding, and the incumbent must have the ability to be on their feet for up to 8 hours per day, lift heavy items, stand for long periods of time and walk long distances throughout the Park for extended periods

Hours of Work:

  • The standard hours for this position are 40 hours per week;
  • This position requires availability for multiple shifts across a 7-day workweek. All roles, except for the Manager, will include weekend shifts. Shifts will be assigned upon offer of employment.
  • During the summer season, from the May Long Weekend to Labour Day, shifts will extend to cover the following hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM and 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM. Please note that shift times may vary based on events and operational needs.
