The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office (APTO) is a branch within the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) that consolidates Provincial Prosecutors with the Advanced Project teams. The purpose of this branch is to increase justice system capacity, improve regulatory enforcement, and improve overall access to justice. The APTO is also dedicated to enhancing current traffic court operations by providing consistent and dedicated management that can be applied to provincial prosecutors across the Province. By consolidating with the new advanced project team, new and innovative technology can be applied seamlessly across the Province.

The APTO also provides prosecution and advanced project policy advice and direction to prosecutors, law enforcement agencies and other justice partners, and enhances the prosecutors’ ability to prosecute various provincial statutes by seeking meaningful amendments to the Criminal Code and related statutes. The APTO also participates in the development of provincial statutes, policies, or programs dealing with the administration of criminal justice within the Province that does not relate exclusively to the Crown.

Role Responsibilities

The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office (APTO) with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Services Division (ACPS) has an opportunity for Provincial Prosecutors to join our Prosecutions team in the Edmonton and Calgary areas.

As a Provincial Prosecutor, you will help deliver justice through fearless, fair and effective prosecutions. The daily responsibilities of the Provincial Prosecutors encompass a multitude of duties, such as: screening files, preparing disclosure, extending early case resolution offers, dealing with witnesses, appearing in court, and recommending appeals.

The Provincial Prosecutor is responsible for the prosecution of provincial offences in the Alberta Court of Justice adult and youth, and managing highly diverse cases from initiation to disposition in court. The Provincial Prosecutor also identifies and recommends alternative processes and streamlining opportunities to the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor.

Specific Duties Of The Position Include

  • Manage the prosecution of provincial offences from charge to disposition.
  • Screen case files to ensure there is reasonable likelihood of conviction and public interest.
  • Review case files to provide disclosure, extend early case resolution offers, identify witnesses and determine trial time.
  • Appear in the Court of Justice to speak to dockets and advance prosecutions.

Qualifications

University degree in a related field supplemented by a minimum of four years’ related experience is required.

Equivalency

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets

  • University degree in a related field such as Criminology, Law, Public Administration and/or Social Sciences.
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Rules of Court, Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Provincial Offences Procedures Act, the Traffic Safety Act and other provincial statutes.
  • Experience using, or knowledge of, Registries Online Access Delivery System (ROADS), Justice Online Information Network (JOIN), TTDS and any other GoA digital platform.
