About Us

SNOLAB is an international facility for world-class underground physics research and has an expanding program in astroparticle physics and underground science. The facility is located in an air-conditioned class 2000 clean room sited 2 km underground in the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario, with a suite of surface facilities and laboratories. SNOLAB is currently preparing for the next generation of experiments focusing on neutrino studies, the search for galactic dark matter, quantum technologies, and underground science. As we expand our research efforts, we are excited to announce that we have two open Research Scientist positions for talented and driven candidates.

The Positions

The Research Scientist is responsible for conducting high-quality research to further the SNOLAB experimental program, aligned with the SNOLAB Strategic Plan, and has several other expected duties. These include:

  • Collaborating with other scientists in the design, development, operations, and scientific data analysis of one or more experiments in the SNOLAB program.
  • Providing support to the SNOLAB scientific community through service work and collaboration engagement, as well as service to the laboratory through technical work and/or management.
  • Applying experimental and simulation techniques to further the SNOLAB program.
  • Reporting experimental results by writing research papers, reports, reviews, and summaries or by presenting information at scientific conferences, workshops, collaboration meetings, and/or public engagements.
  • Making contributions to the broader scientific community.

Research Scientists are expected to have impact and develop or maintain leadership at the national and/or international levels. The position will supervise the work of staff, students, and other highly qualified personnel to deliver on the above expectations, in addition to their own contributions. Research Scientists are expected to ensure that correct procedures are followed while providing technical and intellectual direction in the completion of technical tasks, scientific output, and projects.

The ideal candidates will be responsible for conducting research activities in one of the following concentration areas:

1. Low-Background Science:

Modern experiments that aim to observe rare phenomena require advanced methods to control and assess background processes. The successful candidate will develop low-background technologies that can be used across the laboratory project portfolio. They will lead efforts designed to enhance or develop new low-background techniques. This is an indeterminate position.

2. Quantum Science:

The successful candidate will develop a burgeoning program in quantum sensing, quantum materials, and quantum computing, utilizing the Cryogenic Underground Test (CUTE) facility at SNOLAB. Familiarity with Canada’s National Quantum Strategy will be an asset. This is an indeterminate position.

Criteria

Education: A Ph.D. is required. Candidates with exceptional experience in the specific domain of practice or with relevant expertise will be strongly considered.

Experience: Candidates who meet the following expectations will receive strong consideration:

  • Post-doctoral research and/or practical research/laboratory work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research, including the development and execution of a project, as well as the delivery of results from that project.
  • Demonstrated experience in specific fields or subfields related to the area of concentration.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by presentations at conferences and a strong and ongoing record of publications in relevant journals.

Salary Range: $77,247 - $122,597

Salary will be determined by qualifications and experience and includes an attractive benefits package. Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with SNOLAB policies. To meet operational needs, shift work may be required.

To Apply: [email protected]

All applications must be emailed to [email protected]. Please indicate in the subject line which of the two positions (concentration areas) you are applying for. Please do not fax or mail your applications. By applying to the email address, your application becomes available to managers immediately. Closing Date January 31, 2025

Applications will be accepted until 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. SNOLAB thanks all applicants for their interest, however, only those candidates considered for an interview will be contacted. SNOLAB is committed to equity in employment and encourages applications from all qualified applicants, including women, Indigenous persons, members of visible minorities and persons with disabilities. In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. SNOLAB will provide support in its recruitment processes to applicants with disabilities, including accommodation that considers an applicant’s accessibility needs.
