Starting Salary: $115,000/year

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Communications, the successful applicant will lead the design, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive communications and community engagement program for the Burnaby Refinery. They will be an integral part of the Corporate Affairs team in support of Parkland’s overall engagement and communication objectives.

Working in Burnaby and interacting with leaders and colleagues at all levels of seniority, the successful candidate will be tasked with positioning the Refinery in the community. As a well-organized, creative, and proactive professional, this role will be well-suited for someone who can identify and manage critical community relationships, support and advise internal collaborators, and help us tell the story of the Refinery's people, products and community work, across a host of channels and media platforms.

Driven, self-motivated with a fast-paced work ethic, the successful candidate will have experience in community and stakeholder engagement, communications, and crisis communications.

Responsibilities:

External Communications/Engagement:

  • Develop our community engagement strategy for the Refinery. Identifying high value opportunity partnerships and community sponsorships that align with key community partners and our values.
  • Shape and Lead our Community Engagement Volunteer Panel and their meetings
  • Organize and Lead Public Information Events
  • Identify partnership opportunities in the community that align with the organization’s strategic objectives
  • Foster and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including community leaders, organizations
  • Represent the Refinery at key community and stakeholder events
  • Be a part of crisis communications team, ensuring all employees are informed and up-to-date, and stakeholders are informed
  • Develop and guide the delivery of the external Burnaby Refinery brand and storytelling for social media and other outlets

Internal Communications:

  • Work with key stakeholders across the organization to ensure that all internal communication is aligned with business objectives and supports the company’s culture and values
  • Work directly with the managers of the Refinery’s technical teams to understand upcoming operational and construction activities and any associated impacts in order to develop and implement internal and external messaging.
  • Manage internal events and other initiatives to promote employee engagement and strengthen the company culture

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree required.

Requirements:

  • You are a seasoned communicator with 7-10 years of experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with all staff throughout the Refinery and work as a team player. The candidate will be required to interact with members of the public and businesses involving sensitive issues. The candidate will also be required to work within a large multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience working in the energy industry is an asset.
  • Event co-ordination experience
  • Demonstrated experience with issues management experience preferably on high profile public infrastructure construction projects in an urban environment.
  • IAP2 is an asset
  • Be sensitive and tactful in dealing with issues, concerns, complaints and comments from community members, local businesses, stakeholders, and members of the public.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Proven attention to detail and ability to work independently in a time-effective manner.
  • Crisis Communications and Emergency Response Training
  • You are thoughtful and see issues from every angle.
  • You are collaborative, driven, passionate and deliver impactful work that drives results.
