Basic Function
Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc. (PCLI), an HF Sinclair company is seeking a full-time Manager, Business Optimization. The Manager is responsible to manage quality control and logistics of incoming feedstocks, intermediates and finished products to ensure products meet customer requirements and are delivered on time in full (OTIF). This applies to a complex lubricant plant configured with multiple feedstocks, separate batch operations through three major operating units and a large number of finished products.
Job Duties
- Identify ways to remove or overcome production constraints that may arise in near-term, long-term or emergency situations
- Analyze plan versus actual monthly Short Term Estimate (STE) feedstock purchase and consumption as well as refinery production volumes and resulting impact to overall inventory
- Support the review, development and implementation of strategic initiatives including trial runs at the production unit level
- Lead the evaluation of alternative feedstocks and work with the Trading team to plan feedstock purchases under the guidance of the STE
- Collaborate with Global Supply Chain (GCS) Supply & Planning to identify and resolve forecasted production and inventory levels (including quality concerns) that may deviate from the monthly plan
- Work with Engineering and the Cross Functional Team (CFT) to align trial run timing and maintenance work in the production schedule as required
- Work with the Basestock Quality Team to evaluate new product opportunities and troubleshoot production quality issues
- Work with the Supply/Demand Team to analyze feasibility of sales opportunities based on STE guidance and refinery capability
- Work with Management Leadership Team (MLT) to align strategic initiatives and STE implementation with refinery operations and resource requirements
- Provide the organization with a Business Optimization overview and line of sight to production opportunities and threats
- Identify plant modifications needed to optimize plant operation and profitability and develop business cases for CAPEX justifications
- Respond to emergency situations and ensure safe management of all inventories
- Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion
Experience
- 10 years of related experience
Education Level
- University degree is required in science/engineering/math
- University degree in Chemical/Process Engineering is preferred

- Excel/Spreadsheet knowledge - ability to create, update and troubleshoot complex spreadsheets used in planning and reporting
- Linear Program Knowledge and ability to analyze case scenarios in the LP tool is preferred
- Refinery Production Knowledge and familiarity with lubricant plant operations and chemical processes is preferred
- Familiarity with Management of Change (MOC) processes and procedures, their application and stakeholder involvement is preferred
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility
Responsible for managing and supporting a staff of three production coordinators responsible for:
- Incorporating monthly STE plans, product demands, inventories, unit rates/yields and feedstock delivery logistics into a comprehensive refinery production schedule that is used to prepare daily operating instructions
- Issuing daily operating instructions to the plant defining unit operating targets and directing rundown streams to meet production requirements
- Adjusting feedstock ratios, injection streams, rundown streams and unit operating conditions to ensure all products meet specifications
- Managing feedstock inventories at the Mississauga Refinery and offsite terminals
- Managing logistical supply of incoming feedstocks via trucks, rail cars and marine cargos
- Managing inventory of finished products to align with product demands including the timing of marine cargo loading
- Managing the inventory, logistics and contractual commitments related to naphtha feedstock supply and intermediate exports including cat feed, diesel, reformate and slop
- Managing inventories of feedstocks and intermediates in preparation for planned unit outages
- Managing winter feedstock logistics when marine shipments are shut down due to the seaway closure
- Developing and adjusting the monthly STE using the LP model and communicating the outputs to stakeholders
- Updating the LP model with production unit yields, outage windows and throughput constraints
- Improving the LP model's accuracy and representation of operational nuances
Work Conditions
- This job may require working extended hours to meet organization requirements and deadlines.
- On call/available 24 hours, 7 days a week due to refinery operations.
- Office based within a refinery/manufacturing site. Required to work in Lubricants refinery environment.
- Occasional travel to US and Canada based locations
- Hybrid work role with a minimum of 3 days in office required
