Who we are looking for:

Due to continuing growth in our Health Care and Social Infrastructure practice, our EDO (Engineering Design Organization) is looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to take on the role of Design Manager – Health Care and Social Infrastructure based out of any of our GTA offices - Waterloo, Toronto, Mississauga, Markham, Whitby.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

  • Budgeting: Responsible for managing the engineering design budget and providing key inputs to the Project Controls team.
  • Project Planning: Responsible for managing multi-disciplinary project delivery for health care and social infrastructure projects to produce a compliant, constructible design in accordance with Client requirements, Operation and Maintenance requirements, and Construction requirements. Manage the production of project and workstream plans, ensuring that all activities are identified, are appropriately organized and resourced to deliver project objectives, and comply with the organization's project and program management framework.
  • Project Delivery: Participate reviewing and improving the overall project strategy to meet design schedule and budget. Familiarity with different project delivery methods on larger projects, including Progressive Design-Build (PDB), Alliances, and Public-Private Partnerships (P3s), is an asset. Convenes, chairs, and documents interdisciplinary design coordination meetings and brings forward updates and any critical issues that impact external stakeholders to the Project Manager.
  • Design: Lead the creation and execution of design work plan and level of effort (LOE). Participate to continuously review and improve the overall project strategy to meet design schedule and budget with the ability to support staging and phasing requirements. Coordinate the preparation of the design criteria by the team leads. Ensure the design produced follows appropriate engineering processes, including GHD and Project specific processes. Lead the creation and execution of design work plan and level of effort (LOE).
  • Quality Control: Responsible for coordinating Quality Control of all deliverable submittals in accordance with GHD’s Quality Management System.
  • Change: Contribute to implementing and following the project’s Change Control system, including proactive escalation of potential changes.
  • Leadership and Direction: Coordinates the preparation of the design criteria by the team leads. Ensure fluid communication between the project management team, the design team, construction team, and the various internal and external stakeholders as engineering elements.
  • Project Reporting and Review: Manage the project review process; provide stakeholders with accurate and relevant information and key recommendations at established review points to enable them to evaluate progress and agree on change.
  • Technical Scope: Responsible for developing or verifying the technical scope of a project and working with disciplines to provide pricing during proposal, and subsequently work planning following project award to initiate design activities.

What you’ll bring to the team:

  • Bachelor’s (B.Sc.) degree or equivalent from a recognized college or university.
  • 5+ years of design management experience on multi-discipline architectural or engineering teams for health care and social infrastructure projects within Canada.
  • Technical proficiency and previous project design experience in clinical design, construction, or operational environment.
  • Expertise in human-centered design or healthcare facility planning, including knowledge of hospital regulations, CSA Standards for health facilities, and accessibility standards.
  • Familiarity with building information modeling (BIM) and integrated project delivery (IPD) approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience in the Ontario healthcare planning and design environment, including various capital planning approval stages with the Ministry of Health
  • Knowledge of scheduling software and engineering and capital cost estimating techniques is a definite asset.
  • Familiarity with different project delivery methods on larger projects, including Progressive Design-Build (PDB), Alliances, and Public-Private Partnerships (P3s), is an asset.
  • Member of the PEO, an asset.
  • The ability to deal with uncertainty, changing and multiple priorities.
  • Strong skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Salary range: $98,160 - $144,160

The salary range is based on the preferred work location. If the selected candidate’s location differs, changes to the salary range may apply.
